In the vast agricultural landscapes of Australia, a remarkable story unfolds. The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS), the governmental gatekeeper of data, unfurls an intriguing tale – in May, around 67 thousand tonnes of gram embarked on international journeys from the land down under. Yet, when June arrived, this modest figure underwent a phenomenal transformation, soaring above 1.57 million tonnes. In this enigmatic dance of exports, another actor, the lentil, exhibited a contrary performance, witnessing a decline from 2.61 million tonnes to 1.59 million tonnes during the same period.

In the heart of India, 124 tonnes of gram arrived in May 2023 alone, offering a rich infusion of flavor to local cuisines. Lentils, another star in this gastronomic tale, surged to new heights, with exports from Australia reaching a remarkable 1.3 million tonnes over these nine months. During this journey, 2.47 million tonnes of lentils embarked on an oceanic adventure in the October-December 2022 quarter, followed by 4.81 million tonnes in the January-March 2023 quarter. As April’s breeze whispered of new beginnings, 1.52 million tonnes sailed forth, while May embraced 2.61 million. In June, a graceful 1.59 million tonnes marked the end of this enchanting voyage.

India, ever the epicurean, played a prominent role, importing a staggering 6.21 million of lentils. The unfolding story includes 1.23 million tonnes in October-December 2022, followed by 1.61 million tonnes in January-March 2023.

Australia brings stability to the global market

In summary, Australia’s remarkable increase in gram and lentil exports signifies a positive development in the global legume market. It enhances supply, promotes price stability, and contributes to food security while offering economic opportunities for Australia and strengthening international trade relationships. This surge underscores the importance of agricultural diversity and global cooperation in ensuring a stable and resilient food supply chain.
