$1.3 Billion Damage in the Agricultural Sector in Türkiye

The Strategy and Budget Presidency announced the financial losses caused by the earthquake disaster in its ‘Kahramanmaraş and Hatay Earthquakes Report’. The agricultural sector suffered great damage due to the earthquakes. According to the ‘Kahramanmaraş and Hatay Earthquakes Report’, the total damage to the agricultural sector in Türkiye amounted to TL 24.2 billion (USD 1.3 billion) according to preliminary assessments.

 

According to the report, 15.3 percent of the country’s agricultural output is produced in earthquake-affected provinces. In provinces other than Gaziantep, the share of agriculture in the economy is above the national average. The share of agriculture in total production is 20.8 percent in Şanlıurfa, 14 percent in Kilis and Diyarbakır, and 13.1 percent in Adıyaman.

The region’s 40.3 million decares of agricultural land corresponds to 16.9 percent of all agricultural land in Turkey. As of 2022, 26 percent of the fruit growing areas and 16.2 percent of the field agriculture area in Turkey are located in these provinces. The region has an important place in the country’s agriculture in terms of apricot, almond, pomegranate and olive production.
