Belgian Fontane Potato Yields Hit New Low While Prices Hold Steady

Belgian Fontane potato yields fall about 21% below average, with small tuber size and quality issues, yet grower prices and starch quotes stay broadly stable.

Belgian Fontane potato yields have fallen to their lowest level since trial digs began in 2008, but the immediate market reaction remains muted, with prices largely unchanged into the coming weekend. Tight raw material availability is cushioned by still-orderly demand and relatively calm spot trading.

After an exceptionally dry summer, the fifth and largely final trial digs on 33 Belgian commercial Fontane fields confirm a markedly undersupplied crop. Average yields of just over 38 t/ha, well below the five-year mean, combine with historically weak size distribution and slightly declining underwater weight to limit the volume of processing-quality potatoes. Regional contrasts are stark: irrigated West Flanders performs significantly better than the rest of Flanders and Wallonia, yet also shows more regrowth issues. Despite these structural supply constraints, producer organizations currently describe the market as stable, with little expectation of short-term price moves.

Key Belgian Crop Results

The latest trial digs for Fontane on 33 Belgian practice plots (as of 21 September) put the average yield at only 38.2 t/ha (+35 mm, including waste). After 152 growing days and with about half of the area already defoliated, the season is effectively over. The five-year average of 48 t/ha is missed by around 21%, marking the lowest final yield since the test series began in 2008; the previous low was 42.7 t/ha in 2022.

Size distribution is equally problematic. Only 54% of tubers above 35 mm reach the +50 mm fraction, versus roughly 80% in the five-year mean. Underwater weight averages 397 g/5 kg, below both the five-year average (413 g) and the relatively low-yielding seasons of 2018 (403 g) and 2022 (440 g). In Flanders the underwater weight has slipped again, with West Flanders hardest hit and four plots falling below the 360 g norm. Two lots show about 7% floaters, indicating quality risks for long storage and processing.

Regional Spread & Quality Risks

Yield dispersion is unusually wide, ranging from 15 to 61 t/ha, prompting a larger sample of 20 plants per plot in the latest digs. West Flanders, helped by somewhat more August rainfall and in some cases irrigation, reaches around 47 t/ha. By contrast, the rest of Flanders and Wallonia manage only about 35 t/ha on average, clearly signalling a structural supply deficit in key non-irrigated zones.

Late growth in the west, however, has triggered regrowth problems. On six of the nine West Flanders plots, between 5% and 38% of tubers are affected, increasingly with daughter tuber formation, which complicates harvest and grading for processors. In the rest of Flanders, only a single plot shows regrowth at 7%. Overall wastage remains contained at up to 4%, although one coastal polder lot exhibits occasional late blight. These mixed quality signals mean that the effective volume of processing-suitable Fontane is even tighter than headline yields suggest.

Prices & Market Mood

Despite the historically low Belgian Fontane output, producer organizations expect little change on the price front heading into the coming weekend; the market is described as stable. The latest joint market report for industrial potatoes in Belgium quotes Fontane at around 20 EUR per 100 kg ex VAT at the end of September, broadly in line with Belgapom indications for processing potatoes in recent days.

Parallel signals from other grower platforms confirm a firm but not yet overheated tone, with quotations for storage potatoes such as Fontane from store generally in the low-20s EUR per 100 kg range depending on quality and delivery window. The contrast between tight physical fundamentals and calm spot prices suggests that processors are so far well covered in contracts and are managing intake without aggressive bidding. For now, buyers appear confident that logistical flow and regional imports can balance the short domestic crop.

Fundamentals & Link to Starch

The weak 2026 Belgian Fontane crop fits into a broader North-West European picture of constrained potato availability. North European Potato Growers have planted significantly fewer consumption potatoes this spring, adding a structural tightening layer on top of the weather-driven yield losses. Against this backdrop, industrial users will closely monitor not only volume but also starch content, as underwater weight trends slightly downward relative to multi-year norms.

On the derivative side, potato starch prices remain notably stable. Polish potato starch (powder, FCA Lodz) is currently indicated at 0.625 EUR/kg, unchanged across recent updates in August and September. This lack of movement underlines that starch markets, for now, are better supplied or less demand-driven than the fresh processing segment, and are not yet fully reflecting the pressure from weak Fontane yields.

Weather & Harvest Outlook

Following an exceptionally warm, sunny and dry summer, recent rainfall in August improved conditions only locally, with many fields still considered rather dry for ideal lifting. As the season winds down, the focus now shifts from growth to harvest logistics and storage preparation. The combination of dry soils and regrowth in parts of West Flanders calls for careful lifting and sorting to limit mechanical damage and to separate regrowth tubers.

Short-term weather forecasts for Belgium point to generally mild early-autumn conditions with limited heavy rainfall risk in the immediate days ahead, supporting a gradual continuation of lifting campaigns. In practice, this should help avoid further quality deterioration but will not materially change the already fixed yield level in most parcels.

Trading Outlook

  • Growers: With yields and large tuber share both at multi-year lows, prioritize quality management and storage hygiene to preserve the value of limited stocks. Avoid hasty forward sales where storability is good, as fundamental tightness may support prices later in the season.
  • Processors: Maintain close monitoring of intake quality (underwater weight, size distribution, regrowth share) and consider diversifying origins or varieties to secure sufficient fry-grade raw material without overpaying for marginal lots.
  • Traders: The current price stability masks significant structural tightness. Focus on well-documented, high-quality parcels and be cautious with speculative shorts, as any demand shock or logistics issue could quickly trigger stronger price responses.
