Black Gram Market Under Pressure as Imports Cap Festival-Driven Demand

India’s black gram market is trading softer as ample imports from Myanmar and Brazil, rising arrivals and weak mill buying cap festival-led demand.

India’s black gram (urad) market is currently trading with a soft-to-sideways bias as steady imports and ongoing domestic arrivals outweigh only moderate festival-led demand. Imported Myanmar-origin FAQ and SQ offers have eased, and with inventories comfortable at key ports, buying from dal mills remains cautious and largely hand-to-mouth. At major centres like Chennai and Mumbai, prices have shifted from previously firm levels to a more stable-to-weaker tone, with importers willing sellers on existing stocks. Domestic arrivals from key producing regions are gradually increasing, limiting the scope for any sustained rally even as festival consumption supports urad dal demand through November.

Prices

Spot urad markets across India show a mild downtrend after earlier gains in October. In Chennai, Myanmar-origin FAQ and SQ quotations have softened over recent days as weaker CNF levels from Myanmar are passed through to the domestic market, while traders report similar stable-to-weaker undertones in Mumbai and other hubs.

Domestic wholesale mandi prices for whole urad are also easing from recent highs, with all-India median mandi values drifting lower over the past week, reflecting weaker mill buying and increased selling by stockists. Short-term price action remains highly sensitive to incremental changes in overseas offers and the pace of new-crop arrivals.

Supply & Demand

On the supply side, India continues to receive regular imported urad flows, primarily from Myanmar but increasingly also from Brazil, leaving port and pipeline stocks comfortable. Domestic arrivals of the new kharif crop are picking up, adding further spot availability and curbing any bullish momentum.

Demand from dal mills is described as limited, with processors buying mainly against near-term sales rather than building forward coverage. This restrained demand, combined with continuing overseas supplies, is keeping physical markets in Chennai, Mumbai and other centres in a stable-to-weak pattern despite the start of the festive consumption window.

Nonetheless, festival-related use of urad dal for traditional foods is expected to lend a floor to consumption through November, helping to prevent a sharper correction as long as arrivals do not accelerate sharply.

Fundamentals & Weather

The current fundamental picture is one of ample near-term supply. Market reports highlight an overhang of Myanmar-origin stocks and ongoing import programs, while domestic crops are entering markets under broadly favourable late-monsoon weather, supporting yields and harvest progress.

Weather across major urad-growing regions has recently been benign, with no widespread harvest-disrupting events reported. This points to a gradual increase in arrivals into November, reinforcing the view that supply will remain comfortable unless adverse conditions emerge unexpectedly.

Short-Term Outlook & Trading Pointers

  • Price tendency: Soft-to-sideways bias is likely to persist in the near term as imported stocks and domestic arrivals outweigh only moderate festive demand.
  • For buyers (dal mills, packers): Hand-to-mouth coverage remains appropriate while prices drift lower; consider modest forward booking only if overseas offers show signs of turning higher or if arrivals slow unexpectedly.
  • For stockists/traders: High visible inventories and continued import flows argue against aggressive long positions; use any short-lived festival-led bounces to lighten stocks.
  • Key watchpoints: Myanmar CNF offer trends, the pace of Brazilian arrivals, and the strength of mill offtake after the peak festival weeks will be decisive for post-November price direction.

3-Day Market Indications

  • Chennai (imported FAQ/SQ): Bias mildly weaker to steady as cheaper Myanmar offers and importer selling persist.
  • Mumbai (imported & domestic): Stable-to-soft tone expected, tracking overseas offers and cautious mill buying.
  • Other Indian centres: Predominantly sideways with a slight downward tilt, with festival demand providing only partial support against expanding supplies.
