Chilean Prunes Hold Firm in Europe as Export Market Stays Tight

Chilean prunes hold firm around EUR 2.95/kg FCA Lodz as supply stays tight, exports ease and European demand remains robust. Short-term outlook: stable to slightly firmer.

Chilean dried prune prices in Europe remain firm, with FCA Poland levels steady and supported by a structurally tight export balance from Chile and resilient demand in Eastern Europe. European buyers report limited room for downside in Chilean prune offers as Chile, the key global supplier, continues to ship at relatively high customs unit values while overall export growth in key fruit regions has slowed. In Poland, a dense network of dried-fruit buyers keeps import demand active, underpinning pricing for Chilean-origin product. Weather in central Chile is seasonally cool but stable for orchards, with no acute short-term threats reported. Against this backdrop, near-term price action in Europe is expected to stay sideways to slightly firmer, particularly for standard industrial grades.

Prices

Current indicative level for Chilean prunes (Prunes Elliot, origin CL) FCA Lodz, Poland stands at EUR 2.95/kg, unchanged versus the last update on 21 September 2026 and marginally above early-September values in the same location. Chilean export customs data show July 2026 unit values around 3,515 USD/t, on the low side of the last 12 months but still higher year-on-year, confirming that export prices remain historically firm despite recent easing.

Local reports from the European market indicate that Chilean dried prune prices have edged higher in early September as supply tightens, with FCA Poland indications described as firm and EU import prices well above last year. Combined with active dried-fruit buying interest in Poland, this suggests limited discounting room for Chilean origins in the short term.

Supply & Demand

Chile remains the dominant global prune exporter, accounting for more than 40% of world trade and shipping about 84,700 tonnes in 2024, valued near 255 million USD. Export unit values around 3.5 USD/kg underline a structurally firm price floor, even as monthly customs values oscillate within a relatively narrow band.

In Poland, dried fruit (HS 0813) imports are supported by a broad base of at least 77 active buyers and 256 observed shipments over recent years, indicating a competitive but robust demand environment for imported dried fruit, including prunes. Historical trade analysis for Poland shows that dried prune imports have grown strongly, reinforcing the country’s role as a key Eastern European demand hub.

On the supply side in central Chile (O’Higgins and Maule), the export sector has been under pressure from a broader slowdown in regional shipments, with O’Higgins’ total exports down 13.4% year-on-year in July 2026 and the silvoagricultural segment, including fruit, also weaker. While mining explains much of the aggregate decline, weaker food exports signal that fruit processors and exporters are cautious, which can limit aggressive prune selling.

Weather & Crop Conditions (Chile, CL)

Agrometeorological monitoring across central Chile shows stable late-winter to early-spring conditions in O’Higgins and Maule, with the main prune-growing valleys registering normal station status and no acute frost or heat anomalies over mid-September. Recent bulletins focus on long-term drought and resilience but do not flag new short-term weather shocks beyond the well-known April frosts that mainly impacted cherries earlier in 2026.

Soil-moisture and NDVI assessments from regional observatories point to mixed but manageable conditions, with drought still a structural issue but not currently escalating. For prunes, which are now moving through post-harvest and marketing phases, the absence of fresh weather stress supports a steady supply outlook for the remainder of the 2025/26 marketing year.

Fundamentals & Market Drivers

  • Export pricing: July 2026 Chilean prune export values at 3,515 USD/t sit below the recent 12-month average of 3,749 USD/t but remain above last year, signaling a modest correction from peaks rather than a full downturn.
  • Regional export slowdown: O’Higgins’ July 2026 exports fell 13.4% year-on-year, with agriculture and food shipments down around 9%, reflecting broader headwinds for fruit exporters and supporting firmer price ideas.
  • European demand: Reports of firm Chilean prune prices in Europe and high EU import levels compared with last year highlight resilient demand, particularly for standard industrial grades used in food manufacturing.
  • Polish buyer base: A diversified group of dried-fruit buyers in Poland ensures ongoing spot and contract demand, reducing the risk of sudden demand gaps for Chilean FCA Lodz offers.

Trading Outlook

  • Short-term bias (1–3 weeks): Sideways to slightly firmer. With Chilean export unit values still historically elevated and European demand steady, FCA Lodz levels around EUR 2.95/kg look broadly supported.
  • For buyers: Consider covering near-term needs at current levels, especially for standard sizes, while negotiating on logistics rather than headline price, as downside appears limited without a demand shock.
  • For sellers: Maintain offer discipline; focus on quality differentiation and service in Poland and surrounding markets rather than undercutting on price, given Chile’s structural role in global prune supply.
