China millet market: farmers reluctant to sell, millers buying cautiously, costs stable. Short-term outlook points to flat millet and milled millet prices.

Next week China’s millet and milled millet prices are expected to remain broadly stable, with only limited upside for high-quality lots despite firming export offers. Market participants in key producing regions report that most millet grain remains in farmers’ hands as this season’s low prices discourage aggressive selling. On the demand side, many mills are running with lower inventories than a year ago, but downstream demand for milled millet is soft, prompting processors to prioritize working through existing stocks rather than expanding raw grain purchases. With acquisition costs and processing margins relatively steady, both millet and milled millet are seen trading sideways in the short term.

Prices

Domestically, mainstream millet and milled millet prices in China are assessed to be stable into next week, in line with steady on-farm and mill-gate buying costs and cautious procurement behavior. Only a few players in producing areas are selectively building positions in better-quality grain, seeing limited available supply there.

Export-oriented quotes show a mildly firm tone. In China, FOB Beijing offers for hulled yellow millet kernels are currently quoted at EUR 0.89 for conventional (99.95% purity) and EUR 0.99 for organic (99.90% purity), both slightly above late-October levels. In Ukraine, Odesa quotations for millet seeds (hulled, yellow, FOB) stand at EUR 0.351, up from EUR 0.337 at the end of October, while FCA prices for inshell yellow millet seeds remain at EUR 0.36 and inshell red at EUR 0.37 per kg.

Supply & Demand

On the supply side, most physical millet stocks are still held at farmer level. Given the low price environment this season, growers show little enthusiasm to sell, effectively tightening spot availability in commercial channels despite adequate overall harvest volumes. A minority of market participants in core producing areas believe high-quality grain is not abundant and are selectively locking in suitable lots for storage.

Demand conditions are subdued. Many mills report lower millet inventories than the same period last year, yet they are in no rush to restock because throughput of milled millet is slow. Wholesalers in several regions are actively running down existing milled millet inventories, and this destocking focus means that few are engaging in large forward purchases. As a result, mill procurement is mostly geared toward maintaining processing stocks rather than expanding coverage.

Fundamentals

Acquisition costs for raw millet are reported to be stable, and processors also face little fluctuation in their mainstream purchase prices for milled millet. This cost stability underpins the expectation of a flat price trajectory in the near term, with limited incentive for either side of the market to initiate aggressive price moves.

From a broader grains perspective, recent assessments of China’s cereal balance suggest overall comfortable grain supplies and generally stable domestic cereal prices, which also constrain any sharp upside in minor grains like millet. Globally, millet production is projected to be broadly steady year-on-year, keeping the international market well supplied even as demand gradually grows in health and climate-resilient food segments.

Weather & Harvest Conditions

Recent national agrometeorological updates indicate that North China and the Huang-Huai regions have enjoyed generally favorable light and temperature conditions with mostly dry weather, supporting the completion of autumn harvesting and post-harvest drying operations. Over the coming days, northern producing areas are expected to remain largely sunny with temperatures near or slightly above seasonal norms, conditions that are neutral to mildly supportive for grain storage and logistics.

Some southern and southwestern regions face more frequent rainfall episodes, which could intermittently disrupt transport and handling, but millet production there is relatively limited compared with the core northern belt. Overall, weather is not viewed as a major near-term driver for millet prices, with market dynamics dominated instead by selling behavior, inventories and demand trends.

Short-Term Outlook & Trading Ideas

Market outlook (next 1–2 weeks, China): Both upstream millet grain and downstream milled millet markets are expected to trade in a narrow range, with mainstream prices stable and only localized firmness possible for high-quality, well-sorted lots.

  • For mills: Maintain a hand-to-mouth buying strategy focused on quality. With farmers reluctant to sell but demand still weak, avoid over-extending coverage; instead, use temporary dips or increased farmer selling interest as opportunities to replenish working stocks.
  • For traders: Basis and quality spreads are likely to offer more opportunity than flat-price moves. Consider selectively building positions in premium-grade millet where confirmed supply is thin, while hedging overall exposure through diversified coarse grain portfolios.
  • For farmers: Given today’s low but stable price pattern, staggered sales may help manage risk. Pay attention to any pick-up in mill or export demand for high-quality grain, which could briefly improve bid levels without signaling a broad market rally.

3-Day Regional Price Indication (Direction Only)

  • North China domestic millet (farm-gate & mill-gate): Sideways; spot quotations expected to fluctuate narrowly around current levels.
  • FOB Beijing millet kernels (export-grade): Slightly firm bias due to stronger offers for high-quality lots, but no major breakout anticipated.
  • Black Sea/Ukrainian millet (FOB/FCA Odesa): Mildly supported after recent increases; prices likely to consolidate near current EUR levels over the next three days.
