China Sunflower Seeds: Weak Demand Weighs as New Crop Builds

China’s edible sunflower market turns softer as new-crop supply from Xinjiang, Gansu and Inner Mongolia builds while end‑user demand stays weak.

China’s edible sunflower seed market is entering a soft phase: trading is quiet, supply from new crop is ample and of mixed quality, and prices are likely to edge lower next week despite recently firm FOB quotations from China. Market activity remains lacklustre across key producing and consuming regions. In Xinjiang and Gansu, new-crop sunflower moves slowly, while Inner Mongolia’s Bayannur area also reports subdued buying and weak shipment pace. On the demand side, roasting factories, food processors and small workshops cover only immediate needs, and kernel processors as well as export-oriented players largely stay on the sidelines. Against this backdrop of sluggish downstream offtake and adequate raw seed availability, short-term price risk is tilted to the downside even as high-spec kernels show relatively better resilience.

Prices

Despite the weak spot sentiment in origin areas, recent CN FOB indications in Beijing still show relatively firm levels, especially versus Black Sea origins.

This firmness contrasts with the feedback from producing regions, where slow movement and quality issues suggest rising pressure on lower grades, pointing to a likely mild correction in physical bids at origin even if export offers lag the move.

Supply & Demand

On the supply side, new-crop sunflower from Gansu and Xinjiang is trading only modestly, but overall availability is described as ample. In Inner Mongolia, particularly Bayannur, fresh seed from the new season is coming to market slowly, and quality is generally mediocre with limited volumes of top-grade material.

This creates a two-tier structure: abundant medium-to-low grade seeds face limited buying interest, while scarce high-quality lots should retain a premium. Nationally, the current balance leans burdensome for bulk edible seeds, as farmers and local traders look to move stock but must contend with cautious buyers.

Demand is clearly the weak link. In destination markets, end-user demand is soft and merchants report light offtake. Roasting plants, food factories and small workshops focus on just-in-time replenishment instead of forward coverage, while kernel processors and export-oriented shelling plants largely stay in wait-and-see mode, leading to thin overall trading volumes.

Fundamentals & External Drivers

Fundamentally, several factors align in favour of slight near-term price downside for Chinese edible sunflower seeds. First, the slow pace of lifting in Xinjiang, Gansu and Inner Mongolia indicates that pipeline stocks are building at origin rather than being absorbed by the distribution chain.

Second, feedback from domestic markets points to weak consumption in snack and bakery channels, with buyers unwilling to chase prices higher. Third, Black Sea and Eastern European sunflower complex values remain competitive, which may cap Chinese export offer ambitions and indirectly restrain domestic price upside for kernels.

Weather in the main northern and north-western regions has already turned seasonally cold, with frost in Xinjiang and dry, windy conditions in Inner Mongolia. This now plays a limited role for yield – the crop is largely harvested – but supports drying and storage, implying that supply pressure from farmer selling can continue into early November without major quality loss.

Short-Term Outlook & Trading Ideas

Given current feedback from producers and traders, national sunflower seed prices in China are expected to see a modest decline next week, driven mainly by heavy supply of average-quality lots and lacklustre downstream demand.

  • For crushers and roasters: Consider a patient buying strategy, lifting only high-quality parcels on dips while letting weaker grades reprice lower as farmer selling persists.
  • For exporters of kernels: Maintain selective procurement focused on premium raw material; short-term downside in bulk seeds could improve processing margins if FOB kernel prices hold.
  • For farmers and local traders: Avoid aggressive asking prices on medium and low grades. Gradual, disciplined selling may be necessary to stay ahead of further softening, especially where quality is already compromised.

3-Day Directional Price View (China FOB)

  • Sunflower seeds, Black with stripe, CN FOB Beijing: sideways to slightly softer tone as weak domestic demand meets still-firm offer levels.
  • Sunflower kernels, confection and bakery, CN FOB Beijing: broadly steady, with better support for high-spec and organic lots, while any downside would likely be limited and volume-driven.
