EU sunflower 2026: deep yield cuts in France, Hungary, Austria vs. bumper crops in Bulgaria and Romania. Price signals mixed; trading outlook and 3‑day view.

Severe yield losses in key Western and Central EU producers are tightening regional sunflower seed availability, but strong crops in Bulgaria and Romania, plus ample Black Sea supply, are so far preventing an outright price spike. The latest EU crop monitoring update paints a highly polarized sunflower picture for 2026. Drought and heat have hit France, Hungary, Austria, Slovakia and Germany hard, while Bulgaria and Romania harvest clearly above-average yields. This split is shaping a market where nearby European crushers face localized supply tension and stronger basis levels, even as global seed and oil availability remains relatively comfortable. Recent offers for Ukrainian and Bulgarian origins suggest only modest firming so far, but the balance of risks for winter points mildly upward, especially if logistics from the Black Sea or demand from Asia and the Middle East strengthen.

Prices

Physical sunflower indications show a mixed but slightly firmer tone along the Black Sea and intra-EU trade corridor. Ukrainian black sunflower seeds (98% purity) are quoted at 0.39 EUR/kg FCA Odesa and 0.41 EUR/kg FCA Kyiv, with FOB Odesa levels at 0.565 EUR/kg, only marginally below mid-October values, signaling stable export competitiveness. Sunflower kernels meal FOB Odesa stand at 0.543 EUR/kg, edging down from earlier in the month, while crude sunflower oil CPT Odesa last registered at 1.032 EUR/kg, easing versus mid-October.

Within the EU, Bulgarian black sunflower seeds are offered at 0.44 EUR/kg FCA Sofia, and Moldovan origin delivered FCA Rheinfelden (Germany) stands at 0.45 EUR/kg, pointing to balanced seed availability in Southeast and Eastern Europe. Hulled bakery-grade kernels show more volatility: Bulgarian product FCA Berlin has recently jumped to 1.08 EUR/kg from 0.92 EUR/kg, while similar Moldovan kernels FCA Rheinfelden hold at 0.93 EUR/kg. Chinese confection and bakery kernels FOB Beijing mostly range between 1.03 and 1.26 EUR/kg depending on grade and organic status, with some recent softening on conventional confection quality.

Supply & Demand

The new JRC crop monitoring update for 26 October 2026 cuts the EU average sunflower yield forecast to 1.93 t/ha, about 3% below the five-year mean and 2% lower than the September outlook. The heaviest yield damage is concentrated in France, Hungary, Austria, Slovakia and Germany, where prolonged summer heat and drought significantly curtailed productivity. France is now projected at only 1.58 t/ha, around 30% under its five-year average, while Hungary is pegged at 1.69 t/ha, or 33% below its norm after a sharp 12% downward revision versus September.

Austria’s yield is estimated at 1.95 t/ha, 27% under its long-term mean, with Slovakia at 2.10 t/ha (−19%) and Germany at 2.01 t/ha (−13%). In contrast, Southeast Europe stands out positively: Bulgaria is forecast at 2.51 t/ha, 25% above its five-year average, and Romania at 2.20 t/ha, up 23%. The Bulgarian figure has been revised a further 5% higher from September, and harvest there is already complete. Ukraine’s sunflower harvest is reported as well-advanced, adding substantial seed and oil availability to the wider Black Sea market, even though no official numerical yield figure is provided in the latest bulletin.

This regional divergence implies that intra-EU flows will be crucial: deficits in France, Hungary and neighboring importing regions are likely to be partly backfilled by surplus sunflower seed and kernels from Bulgaria, Romania and non‑EU origins such as Ukraine and Moldova. For crushers in Central and Western Europe, the combination of reduced local output and freight costs from Southeast Europe and the Black Sea suggests tighter nearby margins and potentially stronger regional basis levels, even if global balances remain comparatively comfortable.

Fundamentals & Weather

From a fundamental standpoint, the downward adjustment of the EU yield to 1.93 t/ha confirms that summer weather stress has caused lasting damage in several major seed-producing member states. However, Southeast Europe’s strong performance significantly offsets losses in the West and Centre, limiting the overall deficit at EU level. Bulgaria’s and Romania’s yields, exceeding their long-term averages by roughly a quarter, underpin an exportable surplus of seeds and kernels and help keep Black Sea FOB and EU FCA prices from surging.

Globally, external analyses point to an increase in 2026/27 sunflower seed output compared with the previous season, particularly in the Black Sea region, which continues to dominate exportable supplies. While some EU crushers will experience localized tightness and must bid more aggressively for nearby deliveries, import availability from Ukraine and other origins remains relatively favorable. Weather-wise, with European sunflower harvests essentially completed in Bulgaria and far advanced in Ukraine, short-term meteorological risks for the current crop are limited; going forward, attention will shift to logistics, export policy and competing oilseed pricing rather than field conditions.

Trading Outlook

  • Crushers in Western/Central EU: Lock in nearby seed and kernel coverage from Southeast Europe and Ukraine where basis is still moderate, as regional tightness in France, Hungary and Austria could widen differentials later in Q4.
  • Producers in Bulgaria and Romania: Consider staged sales to capture potential basis improvement, but avoid excessive delay given broadly adequate global sunflower availability and softer crude oil indications from Odesa.
  • Buyers of bakery and confection kernels: Diversify origin mix (BG, MD, UA, CN) and time purchases, as recent price spikes on select EU bakery kernels suggest short-term tightness that may ease once full export flows normalize.
  • Feed compounders: Take advantage of relatively stable sunflower meal values FOB Odesa to secure autumn and early winter needs, especially if alternative meals (soy, rapeseed) firm on external factors.

3‑Day Price Indication

  • Black Sea (Ukraine): Sunflower seeds (FCA/FOB Odesa, Kyiv) and meal (FOB Odesa) are expected to trade sideways to slightly firmer over the next three days, reflecting balanced export demand and already advanced harvest pressure.
  • Southeast EU (Bulgaria, Moldova): FCA seed and kernel values are likely to remain broadly stable in the very short term, with only minor basis adjustments as logistics and crush programs are finalized.
  • EU Import Hubs (Germany, Poland): Delivered FCA prices for Bulgarian and Moldovan kernels may stay firm but range‑bound, with buyers cautious about chasing the recent uptick until clearer signals emerge from global vegetable oil markets.
