Indian jaggery and sugar stay firm on tight arrivals and demand, while European FCA white sugar quotes soften slightly ahead of India’s new crushing season.

Indian jaggery and refined sugar markets are holding firm on reduced arrivals and steady demand, while European FCA white sugar quotes have eased slightly. The start of India’s 2026/27 crushing season should gradually loosen the domestic sweetener balance and temper upside risks. Physical sweetener markets in India remain supported as jaggery and shakkar arrivals run below normal and wholesale buying stays active. Sugar prices are comparatively firm, reflecting cautious selling by mills ahead of peak festival consumption. At the same time, European FCA granulated sugar quotations in Lithuania, Great Britain and Central Europe show marginal softening versus mid‑October highs, suggesting some relief on the refined side as new-crop beet supply builds. With India’s cane crushing ramping up on schedule and comfortable national sugar stocks, the global complex is transitioning from a tight nearby tone to a more balanced medium-term outlook.

Prices

Indian wholesale markets report higher quotations for jaggery and shakkar, underpinned by reduced arrivals and consistent festival-season demand. Sugar prices in these centres are described as comparatively firm, with mills managing sales to support realizations while monitoring early crushing progress.

In Europe, recent FCA granulated sugar offers indicate mild weakness from peak levels. Lithuanian ICUMSA 45 sugar in Mirijampole is quoted at 0.54 EUR/kg FCA, down from 0.56 EUR/kg last week, while comparable British ICUMSA 45 in Norfolk holds around 0.55 EUR/kg FCA. Central European offers range roughly from 0.52–0.67 EUR/kg FCA depending on origin and specification, pointing to mostly stable to slightly softer refined prices as beet campaigns advance.

Supply & Demand

India’s sweetener complex is currently characterised by tight spot availability of jaggery and shakkar due to lower market arrivals, even as underlying demand stays firm. This has allowed traditional sweeteners to outperform, with buyers accepting higher levels to secure nearby needs. Refined sugar is also supported by active festival-season offtake and calibrated mill selling.

Fresh sugarcane crushing is now underway across major Indian producing states. Industry data show that by October 25, around 107 mills had started operations, with early sugar output already materially above last year’s level. Combined with an estimated 36 lakh tonnes of carryover stocks, this ramp-up should ensure adequate domestic availability, gradually easing the current tightness in traditional sweetener segments as new-season jaggery and shakkar enter the market.

Fundamentals & Weather

Fundamentals in India are transitioning from a tight nearby physical situation to a more comfortable forward balance. Government efforts to bring forward the 2026/27 crushing start date, particularly in Maharashtra, and supportive soft loans for mills have accelerated cane deliveries and early-season production. Mills still need to balance early crushing against recovery rates, but the policy bias clearly favours higher availability to cap domestic inflation.

Weather for key Indian cane belts is mixed but not threatening at this stage. Forecasts point to wetter-than-normal conditions in Uttar Pradesh and warmer, moderately wet weather in the Maharashtra–Karnataka belt over the coming fortnight. This pattern supports late vegetative growth and soil moisture, but excessive rainfall spikes could briefly disrupt cane harvesting logistics if realised. For now, weather remains a secondary driver compared with policy decisions, carryover stocks and the pace of mill start-ups.

Outlook & Trading Takeaways

Market participants should expect Indian jaggery and shakkar prices to stay supported in the very short term as arrivals remain thin and festival demand plays out. However, as new-season cane crushing expands and fresh sweetener supply (including traditional products) reaches mandis, upside momentum is likely to moderate, with quotations becoming more sensitive to mill selling strategies and government stock controls.

  • Physical buyers in India: Consider covering near-term jaggery and shakkar requirements promptly, but avoid overbuying beyond the next few weeks as increased arrivals from new-season production could stabilise or cap prices.
  • European industrial users: Current FCA granulated sugar levels between roughly 0.52–0.67 EUR/kg provide an opportunity to extend cover moderately into Q1 if local beet campaigns continue smoothly and logistics remain normal.
  • Producers & mills: In India, a disciplined selling pace remains key while monitoring government policies on stock limits and any export restrictions; in Europe, attention should focus on regional beet yields and energy costs, which may influence refined margins more than global raw benchmarks.
