Indian Basmati Rice Firms as Exporters and Mills Compete for Limited Paddy

Indian basmati rice prices edge higher as exporters and mills compete for limited 1121 and 1509 paddy. Concise analysis of drivers, risks and near-term outlook.

Indian basmati rice prices are edging higher as renewed exporter buying and mill coverage collide with tight availability of key paddy varieties, notably 1121 and 1509. Market sentiment has turned distinctly firmer, with reports of roughly US$1.06 per quintal gains in a single session underscoring how sensitive prices are to supply signals. Indian basmati is entering a phase of selective strength rather than a broad-based rally. Exporters are back in the market to cover nearby commitments, while mills worry about securing sufficient quantities of suitable paddy as the procurement season advances. This is particularly visible in the premium long-grain segment, where 1121 and 1509 show persistent firmness, contrasting with more stable non-basmati and Vietnamese quotations. With El Niño-related production risks in the background and logistics to West Asia still delicate, the near-term bias for basmati in New Delhi remains modestly upward.

Prices

Exporter and mill buying has pushed Indian basmati rice quotations modestly higher, with local sources indicating around US$1.06 per quintal gains in the latest session for key grades 1121 and 1509. This sessional rise aligns with recent mandi reports of record or near-record paddy levels for 1121 and strong prices for 1509 in North India.

FOB New Delhi basmati-related benchmarks in EUR remain stable at elevated levels rather than surging. 1121 steam is quoted at EUR 0.70 FOB, 1509 steam at EUR 0.64 FOB, and 1121 creamy white sella at EUR 0.60 FOB, unchanged between 10 and 17 October 2026. Organic white basmati stands at EUR 1.57 FOB New Delhi, also flat on the week, while non-basmati organic white rice is at EUR 1.27 FOB. This pattern suggests that the current firmness is still being absorbed within existing offer ranges rather than producing a new price spike.

Supply & Demand

On the supply side, the core driver of the recent basmati firmness is limited availability of preferred paddy varieties. Mills report concerns about securing enough suitable 1121 and 1509 paddy for processing, even as procurement gathers pace. High domestic paddy prices, including record levels for 1121 in parts of North India, reinforce farmer holding power and underpin replacement costs for mills.

Demand-side support is centred on exporters and domestic mills. Export houses are actively covering against existing commitments, particularly into the Middle East and West Asia, despite some logistical and security-related disruptions along key shipping lanes. At the same time, domestic branded and loose-market demand for aromatic basmati remains broadly steady, helping to absorb available stocks and amplifying the impact of any supply shortfall in premium segments.

Fundamentals & Weather

Fundamentally, India remains the dominant global supplier of basmati rice, but the margin of exportable surplus is tightening. Recent analysis points to a prospective decline in total Indian rice production in marketing year 2026/27 due to El Niño-linked rainfall deficits, even if government stocks are currently above minimum buffer norms. This structural backdrop makes spot market participants more sensitive to any indication of short paddy arrivals or quality issues.

Weather across key basmati-growing belts in Punjab and Haryana has recently been seasonally drier following a below-normal monsoon, which is broadly supportive for harvest progress and grain quality but leaves little cushion against any late showers. For now, field reports suggest that current dryness is helping mills receive higher-quality 1121 and 1509 paddy, but also emphasizes the finite nature of the crop: once the core harvest window passes, replacement risk for mills will increase if demand stays firm.

Trading Outlook (Next 1–2 Weeks)

  • Importers / Buyers: Expect a mildly bullish bias in Indian basmati offers, especially for 1121 and 1509 steam and sella. Stagger coverage, taking partial volumes on any intraday dips rather than waiting for a broad correction that current fundamentals do not justify.
  • Indian Mills: Prioritise procurement of quality 1121 and 1509 paddy while availability remains limited but workable. Avoid over-selling forward; maintain a risk buffer on raw material to protect against further paddy appreciation.
  • Exporters: Lock in margins where possible by aligning paddy purchases closely with export commitments. Consider modestly higher offer ideas into risk-sensitive destinations, reflecting tighter basmati supply and ongoing freight and geopolitical uncertainties.

3-Day Directional View

  • India – New Delhi, FOB basmati (1121/1509, steam & sella): Sideways to slightly firmer, with bids underpinned by exporter and mill buying and limited paddy availability.
  • India – New Delhi, organic basmati & non-basmati: Mostly stable with a modestly firm tone, supported by niche demand and elevated paddy costs.
  • Vietnam – Hanoi white and fragrant rice (5% long white, Jasmine, Japonica): Stable; no immediate spillover from Indian basmati firmness, though any sharp move in Indian offers could tighten regional sentiment.
