Indian Fries Challenge Europe as NEPG Signals Sharp 2026 Potato Squeeze

EU-4 potato output for 2026 is set to drop 25.4%, tightening processing supply as India scales up frozen fries exports; prices steady but upside risks grow.

European potato markets are entering the 2026/27 season with structurally tighter raw material in Northwest Europe while India ramps up exports of frozen and prepared potato products. Procurement prices for key processing varieties remain largely stable for now, but the combination of a smaller EU crop and rising global competition in frozen fries points to a more volatile balance ahead for processors, traders and starch users. India’s expanding role will be tested mainly by its ability to deliver consistent quality and logistics rather than volumes alone, as European buyers navigate one of the smallest NEPG crops in a decade. In the short term, quotations for processing potatoes and starch are stable, yet the risk balance has shifted clearly to the upside if European yields underperform further or logistics bottlenecks emerge.

Prices

The domestic KT index for processing potatoes remains unchanged at 24.21 EUR/dt, signalling a temporarily balanced spot market despite the looming supply squeeze. Variety quotations illustrate a widening spread: Fontane was last assessed at 22.00 EUR/dt (range 22.00–23.30 EUR/dt) on 15 October 2026, while Innovator firmed to 27.00 EUR/dt (27.00–28.30 EUR/dt), up 2.00 EUR/dt versus the previous reading.

In Northwest European reference markets, recent processing quotes have been broadly stable, with Dutch and Belgian listings for Fontane and Innovator in a band broadly consistent with these levels, underlining a market that is tight but not yet overheating. On the derivative side there is no longer an EEX potato future, so physical and OTC indicators have become more important for hedging. Potato starch in Poland (FCA Lodz) was last quoted at 0.625 EUR/kg and has been flat over recent updates, suggesting industrial demand is steady rather than surging.

Supply & Demand

The core structural driver is the expected production decline in the four NEPG countries. Marketable potato output in Belgium, France, Germany and the Netherlands is projected to fall by 25.4% to 20.7 million tonnes in 2026 (from 27.75 million tonnes previously), placing the 2026 crop among the smallest in the past decade. Area reductions after the 2025 surplus, combined with heat and drought episodes in July and August, have compressed yields, particularly for processing varieties such as Fontane.

This contraction is already visible in physical markets where processors lean heavily on contracts and old-crop stocks, keeping free-buy volumes limited. Current stability in the KT index and regional quotes masks a structurally tighter 2026/27 balance sheet in Northwest Europe. Any additional weather or storage issues could quickly translate into stronger competition for suitable processing lots and higher premiums for long fries varieties like Innovator.

India’s Export Push

India is emerging as a key challenger in the frozen and prepared potato products trade. In 2025, Indian exports of frozen and prepared potato products increased by 37.4% to 279 million USD (from 203 million USD in 2024), with total potato exports across six major categories reaching roughly 449.6 million USD. The country’s potato harvest for 2025/26 is estimated at 59.89 million tonnes, up from 58.57 million tonnes – nearly three times the output of the four NEPG countries combined.

The reduced European harvest is likely to trigger additional import demand for frozen fries and other frozen potato specialties, creating an opportunity window for Indian suppliers. Representatives at the Global Potato Summit see this as conditional on India supplying at competitive prices, with consistent quality and reliable volumes that meet the rigorous standards of European buyers. Bottlenecks remain: specialized processing varieties, high-grade seed and modern storage infrastructure are still insufficient, which could constrain India’s ability to fully capitalize on Europe’s supply gap in the near term.

Fundamentals & Weather

Fundamentally, the NEPG region faces a season of disciplined supply management. With a smaller 2026 crop and quality concerns such as smaller tuber size and potential early sprouting in parts of Belgium and France, processors are cautious and selective in their purchasing strategies. At the same time, contract volumes for 2026 were reportedly signed at levels 15–25% below last year, creating a divergence between contracted and spot market incentives.

Recent weather in Northwest Europe has stabilized after summer heat and drought episodes, allowing harvest progress, but moisture and temperature swings still pose storage risks for the coming months. Short-term, this supports steady prices; medium-term, any storage losses could tighten free-buy availability and push spot quotations higher, especially for long-storage and high dry-matter lots destined for frozen fries.

Outlook & Trading Strategy

Market outlook (next weeks): With the KT index flat, Fontane stable and Innovator already edging higher, the market appears to be in a calm phase before the tighter 2026/27 fundamentals are fully priced in. The anticipated 25.4% production drop in the NEPG zone and India’s growing export presence point to increased competition for premium processing potatoes and evolving trade flows in frozen fries.

  • Processors: Consider locking in additional coverage for Innovator and other premium fry varieties on price dips, while closely monitoring storage quality data to avoid late-season supply shocks.
  • Growers: Use the current stability around 24.21 EUR/dt as a reference for structured sales, but retain some volume for potential upside later in the season if storage conditions remain good and free-buy supply tightens.
  • Traders & importers: Explore diversified sourcing from India and other origins for frozen fries and prepared potato products, but apply strict quality controls and contingency planning given infrastructure and variety constraints in new supplying regions.
  • Starch and industrial users: With potato starch steady at 0.625 EUR/kg FCA Lodz, review forward cover but avoid over-buying until clearer signals emerge on downstream demand and alternative starch pricing.
