Indian nigella seed FOB New Delhi prices edge higher on firm domestic and export demand, with dry North India weather and a discount to Egyptian origin.

Indian nigella seed prices are ticking higher on steady export and domestic demand, with New Delhi FOB offers up modestly week-on-week while Egyptian levels remain flat but at a clear premium. After several weeks of gradual gains, the nigella complex is now supported by firmer mandi prices in western India and stable export inquiries. With post-monsoon weather in North India turning hot and dry but not yet stressful, near-term supply is comfortable, yet farmers and stockists are holding back aggressively at lower bids. This is tightening spot availability and lending mild support to Indian quotes, while Egyptian origin continues to trade at a structurally higher level, reinforcing India’s competitiveness into key destinations over the coming days.

Prices

FOB New Delhi offers for Indian nigella seeds have inched higher versus early October. Kalonji Sortex 99% now stands at 1.85 EUR/MT FOB New Delhi (up from 1.80 EUR), while Machine Clean 99.80% is quoted at 1.76 EUR/MT FOB New Delhi (up from 1.75 EUR). Egyptian Sortex 99.5% remains stable at a significantly higher 2.00 EUR/MT FOB Kairo, leaving India as the clear price leader for bulk buyers.

Domestic wholesale indications in India are also firmer: recent mandi data show kalonji prices in Rajkot (Gujarat) rising sharply over the past week, with modal levels gaining more than 20% across several sessions from late September into 10 October, signalling strong local demand and limited near-term farmer selling. A Neemuch (Madhya Pradesh) report on 9 October also showed relatively high nigella seed prices and low arrivals, pointing to tight physical supply.

Supply & Demand

In India, nigella is a minor spice, but it competes for area with other high-value crops such as cumin and coriander. Recent mandi trends for kalonji suggest stockists are slowly marking up offers as festival-season buying and oilseed demand pick up. At the same time, government mandi data show relatively small daily arrivals in key producing centres, so even modest buying is enough to tighten the balance.

On the export side, India remains a key origin for nigella/black cumin, supported by ongoing demand from the Middle East, North Africa and Europe. While short-term export statistics are not yet available for October, India’s broader spice export performance has been robust in recent seasons, suggesting continued external demand for niche spices such as nigella. Combined with the sizeable price discount to Egyptian material, this underpins India’s role as the volume supplier for the near term.

Weather & Crop Conditions (India, Region: IN)

Weather in New Delhi and much of North India has shifted into a hot, dry post-monsoon pattern. Forecasts for New Delhi from 11–14 October point to maximum temperatures around 33–34°C and minimums near 23–24°C, with no significant rainfall expected. IMD and other local forecasts for Delhi/NCR confirm mainly dry conditions with only light winds and stable temperatures in the short term.

These conditions are broadly favourable for harvest and post-harvest handling of late-spice crops, reducing drying risks and quality losses in stored stocks. For nigella specifically, the absence of heavy rain or unseasonal humidity in North India over the next few days is supportive of supply stability and should prevent weather-based disruptions to spot availability or logistics.

Fundamentals & Market Drivers

  • Firm domestic baseline: Rising mandi prices in Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh signal a constructive underlying tone, with buyers competing for relatively small marketed surpluses.
  • Export competitiveness: The wide gap between Indian FOB quotes and Egyptian origin keeps India competitive into price-sensitive destinations, especially where nigella is used in blends or as an oilseed.
  • Benign weather risk in the very short term: Stable, dry weather in North India reduces the chance of last-minute quality issues or transport disruptions, which could otherwise squeeze prompt supply.

3-Day Outlook & Trading View

  • Price bias (India FOB New Delhi): Mildly firm. With domestic mandi prices trending higher and export parity still attractive versus Egypt, New Delhi FOB offers are likely to stay supported or edge slightly higher over the next 2–3 days, barring a sudden increase in farmer selling.
  • Buying strategy (importers & grinders): Consider covering short-term physical needs at current Indian FOB levels, especially for Machine Clean grades, given the discount to Egyptian origin and the risk of further incremental gains if domestic demand remains buoyant.
  • Selling strategy (Indian exporters & stockists): Retain a moderately firm offer stance for nearby shipments while remaining flexible on volume discounts for larger parcels, as the current post-monsoon weather and low arrivals favour the seller’s side in prompt positions.

Over the next three trading days, Indian New Delhi FOB nigella seed prices are expected to hold a slightly upward bias, supported by firm domestic mandi markets and stable, dry weather in North India. Egyptian FOB levels should remain steady at a premium, keeping India the preferred short-term origin for price-sensitive buyers.
