Indian Peanuts: Gujarat Crop Shock Tightens Kharif Balance
Gujarat’s 2026/27 groundnut crop is seen down 20.5%, tightening India’s peanut balance and underpinning export and oilseed prices despite only modest EUR gains so far.
Gujarat’s 2026/27 kharif groundnut crop is projected to drop about 20.5% year-on-year, tightening India’s peanut balance and providing a firm undertone to seed and oil prices. Export quotations from India and Brazil in EUR have inched higher rather than spiking, but the downside appears limited as the reduced crop moves fully into marketing channels.
India enters the new marketing season with a materially smaller groundnut crop in its key producing state just as domestic arrivals accelerate. A survey across Gujarat’s main peanut districts points to lower area and weaker yields after inadequate monsoon rains, cutting expected output from roughly 4.18 million tonnes last season to about 3.33 million tonnes in 2026/27. This shock comes on top of a broader national production decline and firm international reference prices, suggesting that crushers, shellers and exporters will need to compete more actively for quality seed. Commercial buyers are likely to face a firmer, more volatile market once early-harvest supplies are absorbed.

Over the first three weeks of October, Indian bold and Java kernels have gained around 0.01–0.02 EUR/kg per update step, reflecting a firming but still orderly market. Benchmark CIF Europe groundnut values remain well above year-ago levels, keeping Indian offers competitive but limiting any aggressive discounting.
At mandi level, all-India groundnut prices have trended higher through October, with median wholesale values rising from about ₹6,950–7,000/quintal in early October to around ₹7,500/quintal by October 24, and Gujarat trading above the national median.
Supply & Demand
The central driver is the sharp decline in Gujarat’s kharif groundnut output. Survey results indicate area dropping from roughly 2.20 million hectares to 2.07 million hectares, while average productivity falls from about 1,902 kg/ha to 1,607 kg/ha. Together, this pulls the state’s crop down from about 4.18 million tonnes last season to around 3.33 million tonnes. Given Gujarat’s status as India’s leading groundnut producer, this 20.5% contraction materially tightens the country’s overall groundnut balance. Separate national-level assessments also point to an approximate 18% decline in India’s total 2026/27 groundnut production versus last season, driven mainly by yield losses rather than large-scale acreage cuts. Lower primary supplies are already influencing the flow of seed to crushers, shellers and exporters. With harvesting underway, near-term arrivals will mask tightness, but once peak marketing passes, competition for higher-quality lots is likely to intensify, especially from edible oil processors and export buyers seeking reliable aflatoxin profiles.

Fundamentals & Weather
The Gujarat survey attributes weaker yields primarily to inadequate monsoon rainfall in several key districts. Many pockets in Saurashtra and other groundnut belts received less than normal precipitation, stressing crops during critical pod-filling stages and reducing overall productivity. Short-range weather forecasts into late October do not signal major new weather threats for Gujarat’s groundnut belt, implying that yield risk is now largely realized and the focus shifts to harvest progress and post-harvest quality. Local reports suggest that while some individual areas like Keshod–Junagadh performed better, the broader state picture is clearly one of reduced output. On the demand side, domestic edible oil users are watching groundnut oil–soy/other soft oil spreads, with current firmness in international vegetable oil benchmarks helping to absorb some of the higher seed costs. Export demand for Indian bold and Java remains steady, supported by structurally tighter global groundnut availability and firm benchmark CIF Europe prices.Trading Outlook
- Importers / Roasters: Consider advancing coverage for Q4 2026–Q1 2027 needs, particularly for high-spec Java and TJ grades, as Gujarat’s smaller crop and stronger global benchmarks limit downside in EUR-denominated offers.
- Crushers / Oil Millers: Expect ongoing support for groundnut seed prices; prioritize early procurement of quality lots before post-harvest stock tightening and potential competition from exporters later in the season.
- Exporters: With only modest recent EUR gains, maintain disciplined forward sales and monitor quality closely; Gujarat’s production shortfall and firm global prices offer an opportunity to secure better margins on premium grades.
- Feed & birdfeed buyers: Birdfeed peanut quotations are currently flat in EUR; use this window to lock inexpensive coverage before further spill-over from the edible and export segments lifts low-grade material.
3-Day Directional Price Indication
- India FOB bold & Java kernels: Slightly firm bias as Gujarat crop estimates circulate and domestic mandi prices hold near recent highs.
- India CFR birdfeed segments: Largely stable, with mild upside risk if seed competition tightens low-grade availability.
- Brazil raw FOB: Steady to slightly firm, moving in line with broader global groundnut benchmarks and Indian offer trends.
