Lentils: India’s Masoor Imports Cap Prices Despite Seasonal Demand

Indian masoor lentil imports from Canada and Australia have doubled, keeping prices in check despite seasonal demand from eastern states.

India’s lentil market is currently well supplied, with strong imports and high port stocks preventing any sharp rally in masoor prices despite rising seasonal demand from eastern states. Masoor imports in the first five months of the current financial year have roughly doubled to about 640,000 tonnes, led by Canada and Australia. This surge in arrivals, combined with substantial inventories at Indian ports, has eased immediate supply concerns and kept domestic wholesale prices in a narrow range, even as winter consumption picks up in Bihar, West Bengal and Assam. Recent trade data and mandi indications suggest a market that is softer than recent highs but still underpinned by consumption growth rather than tightness. Looking ahead into November, demand is expected to improve, yet any upside appears capped by ongoing overseas shipments and comfortable stocks.

Prices

Spot masoor prices in India are described as slightly below recent peaks, reflecting cautious mill buying and abundant imported supply. Seasonal consumption in the eastern states is starting to lend some support, but the presence of large port inventories limits follow-through on any short-term bounce.

On the export side, current product indications show relatively firm but stable values: Canadian FOB Ottawa levels stand at EUR 2.11 for red football lentils, EUR 1.22 for Laird green, and EUR 1.18 for Eston green. Chinese small green lentils FOB Beijing are quoted at EUR 0.88 (conventional) and EUR 0.93 (organic). These quotations point to a broadly steady global price environment with only minor recent adjustments.

Supply & Demand

India’s masoor supply is currently dominated by strong overseas arrivals. Imports in the first five months of the financial year have approximately doubled to 640,000 tonnes, confirming India’s role as the key global demand hub for lentils. Canada and Australia remain the primary origins, shipping competitively priced volumes that feed directly into Indian wholesale markets.

Domestic demand remains seasonally robust, especially in Bihar, West Bengal and Assam, where winter consumption of lentil-based dals typically rises through November. However, this demand is being comfortably met by imported stocks, preventing any acute supply tightness. Market participants widely expect these eastern states to drive incremental offtake over the coming weeks, but ample port inventories and regular vessel arrivals are likely to balance the uptick in usage.

Fundamentals

The core fundamental feature of the current lentil market is the mismatch between very strong import flows and only moderate domestic buying from dal mills. Millers are purchasing cautiously, using existing inventories and waiting for clearer signals on festival and winter demand before stepping up coverage. This behavior is contributing to the soft tone in spot markets despite structurally higher import volumes.

From a global perspective, recent shipments from Canada and Australia underscore their central role in supplying India. Comfortable export availability from these origins, combined with India’s open import stance for masoor, has created a buffer against local crop and logistics risks. As a result, the market balance is currently skewed toward slight oversupply rather than shortage, with imports acting as an effective ceiling on domestic price rallies.

Short-Term Outlook

In the near term, the Indian masoor market is likely to trade sideways with a mild upward bias into late November as seasonal demand strengthens in eastern India. However, the scope for a sustained price increase appears limited by substantial port inventories and the expectation of continued regular arrivals from Canada and Australia.

Unless there is an unexpected disruption in overseas shipments or logistics at Indian ports, imported masoor should remain readily available to domestic buyers. This suggests that any rally driven by temporary stock tightening in inland markets will likely attract selling from holders and increased import interest, capping gains.

Weather & Crop Watch

Weather in major exporting regions (Canada and Australia) has so far supported the availability of exportable surpluses, enabling the strong shipment pace observed into India. There are currently no major reported weather shocks threatening immediate lentil supply from these origins.

For India, attention will gradually shift toward rabi sowing and crop development, but for now, the key driver remains imported supply rather than domestic production prospects. Any later-season adverse weather in South Asia would matter more for the 2026/27 balance than for current spot availability, given the high level of existing stocks.

Trading Outlook

  • Importers / Traders in India: Use current well-supplied conditions to secure nearby coverage, but avoid overbuying given the likelihood that strong Canadian and Australian shipments will continue to cap prices.
  • Dal mills: Maintain hand-to-mouth purchasing with modest forward coverage into late November, as seasonal demand may firm bids slightly but is unlikely to generate a sustained bull run under current stock conditions.
  • Exporters in Canada & Australia: India remains the key demand destination; competitive pricing and logistics reliability will be crucial to defend and expand market share in the face of growing port inventories.
