Linseed from KZ and RU: Stable EU FCA Prices Despite Weather Shifts

Concise linseed market update: stable FCA Dordrecht prices for KZ organic and RU origin, benign weather in KZ/RU, Black Sea logistics risks and 3-day outlook.

Russian yellow linseed FCA Dordrecht is holding flat at about EUR 1.42/kg, while organic brown linseed from Kazakhstan is steady around EUR 1.22/kg, with only a marginal uptick versus early August. Recent weather in key Kazakh flax areas is mild and mostly dry, limiting immediate yield risks and helping keep replacement values and export offers broadly stable. In Kazakhstan’s northern grain belt, the official forecast for 20–22 August points to scattered rains with thunderstorms but no major cold spell, with daytime temperatures largely 20–30°C. This supports good crop conditions during the late vegetative and early ripening phase for linseed. At the same time, broader Black Sea grain logistics are constrained by disruptions in Russian wheat exports via the Azov–Black Sea basin, indirectly underpinning oilseed values by tightening regional export capacity.

Earlier in the season, export linseed prices FCA Kazakhstan for conventional brown linseed were reported around USD 500–505/t (~EUR 0.46–0.47/kg) at origin, with DAP Poland values in the low-to-mid EUR 500s per tonne. Current FCA Dordrecht levels above EUR 1.2/kg for organic product reflect logistics, quality premiums and tighter EU-delivered supply.

Supply & Demand

In Kazakhstan, linseed remains a key export oilseed, with earlier 2025 expansion in planted area and good margins supporting large exportable surpluses into 2026. Reported FCA and DAP prices in the last available national grain-union snapshot suggest external demand remains solid, even as spot values eased slightly at origin.

For Russia, broader grain exports are currently hampered by restrictions and risks in the Azov–Black Sea basin, with August wheat exports projected at the lowest level for the month since 2010 because over 90% of key terminal capacities are disrupted. While this data focuses on wheat, similar logistics and risk premia affect oilseeds and niche crops such as linseed, lending support to EU-delivered replacement costs.

Weather & Crop Conditions (KZ, RU)

Official forecasts for Kazakhstan for 20–22 August show frontal systems bringing thunderstorms and locally heavy rain, but temperatures in the north (including Kostanay and Akmola) generally range from 17–30°C, supportive for linseed growth without heat stress. Historical and short-range forecasts for Kostanay confirm a pattern of mainly sunny days with maximums in the low-to-mid 20s and limited rainfall, suggesting no immediate weather-related cut to yield potential.

For Russian flax areas (Volga, Siberia), no fresh, crop-critical weather alerts have been published in the last three days on major international channels, pointing to seasonally normal conditions. In the absence of significant heat waves or flooding, yield expectations for the 2026 Russian linseed crop remain broadly stable, so near-term supply signals from weather are neutral for prices.

Fundamentals & Trade Flows

EU oilseed dashboards confirm a generally well-supplied oilseed complex, with linseed trading as a niche segment but still influenced by broader rapeseed and sunflower dynamics. Previous seasonal reports noted structural constraints on Russian flax exports due to tariffs and trade measures, while Kazakhstan has emerged as the dominant incremental supplier for Europe.

Given relatively calm weather, high planted area in Kazakhstan, and logistical challenges in Russian Black Sea exports, EU buyers currently enjoy steady linseed availability from KZ via rail and Baltic/continental routes, while Russian-origin product may carry a risk premium tied to political and freight issues. Recent Russian policy moves to extend oilseed export duties (seen in soybeans) signal continued regulatory uncertainty for oilseed exports in general.

Trading Outlook & 3-Day Price View

  • For crushers and feed users: Current FCA Dordrecht levels around EUR 1.42/kg (RU) and EUR 1.22/kg (KZ organic) look broadly in line with fundamentals; consider covering short-term needs but avoid aggressive forward purchases until clearer signals on Black Sea logistics and new-crop KZ yield emerge.
  • For exporters in KZ: Mild, mostly dry weather and stable EU replacement values support maintaining offers; small price reductions are unlikely to trigger major new demand in the next few days.
  • For traders handling RU origin: Logistics and sanction-related risks continue to cap downside; maintain conservative exposure and price-in risk premia for contracts routed via or near the Black Sea.

3-day directional price indication (21–23 August 2026, in EUR):

  • Dordrecht FCA – RU yellow linseed 99.9%: ~1.42 EUR/kg, bias: sideways (±0.01 EUR/kg).
  • Dordrecht FCA – KZ organic brown linseed 99.9%: ~1.22 EUR/kg, bias: sideways to mildly firm (up to +0.01 EUR/kg) on steady demand and tight organic supply.
