Dutch table potato harvest 2026 drops below last year, while Belgapom Fontane and KT Index stay firm. Overview of supply, prices and short‑term outlook.

Dutch table potato supply in 2026 is clearly tighter than last year, but still near the long‑term average. Free‑market quotations in Northwest Europe are holding firm around Belgapom’s 20.00 EUR/dt for Fontane, and the KT Index has only edged slightly lower, pointing to a broadly stable but well‑supported market. A sharply reduced Dutch acreage after last year’s surplus, combined with only slightly lower yields despite drought, is the core driver behind this season’s tighter raw‑material balance. Processors and packers face less buffer than in 2025, yet current prices suggest that buyers are not yet forced into aggressive bidding. Instead, the market is absorbing the smaller crop through stable quotations and modest index corrections. In this environment, contract coverage and logistics discipline are more important than outright price speculation.

Prices

The KT Index has softened only marginally to 24.75 EUR/dt, down 0.126 EUR/dt from the previous week, despite increases in some minor varieties. This reflects a market that is slightly easier in statistical terms, but still underpinned by limited physical availability. For Belgapom Fontane, quotations for 30 October 2026 stand at 20.00 EUR/dt with no change versus the prior listing, underlining the current price stability in the Northwest European processing segment.

Supply & Demand

In the Netherlands, the 2026 gross table potato harvest is estimated at 3.5 million tonnes, 17% below the unusually large 4.2 million tonnes harvested in 2025 but only just under the 10‑year average of 3.6 million tonnes. The key driver is area, not yield: farmers clearly reacted to last season’s surplus by cutting table potato acreage by around 15% to 70,286 ha. Overall potato area fell to 150,134 ha, the lowest since 2012, with 42,157 ha in seed and 37,691 ha in starch potatoes.

Despite a prolonged dry spell, Dutch gross yields for table potatoes remain robust at 49.5 t/ha, only about 3% below last year’s 50.8 t/ha. Widespread irrigation capacity – around one third of arable farms report owning their own irrigation systems – has cushioned weather stress and helped maintain output near trend levels. However, all figures refer to gross yields; net marketable volumes will be lower once grading losses and quality downgrades are taken into account, which may become more visible later in the storage season.

Fundamentals

The combination of significantly reduced area and only slightly weaker yields points to a balanced but tighter fundamental picture than in 2025. Processors and packers must work with a crop that is smaller on paper yet far from catastrophic, which helps explain why Belgapom Fontane and related quotations across Belgium and the Netherlands have remained stable rather than surging. Recent regional market reports also describe export demand as sluggish due to high price levels and a shortage of large tubers, indicating that high prices are already rationing demand and limiting extra outlets.

On the derivative side, the unchanged Belgapom Fontane benchmark at 20.00 EUR/dt and a nearly flat KT Index suggest that speculative activity and free‑market spot trade are relatively subdued. Industrial users are reported to be pulling forward contracted volumes where possible, while free potatoes mainly come from surplus lots on top of existing contracts. This behavior is typical of a season where supply is tight enough to prevent price weakness but not yet tight enough to trigger a broad‑based rally.

Weather & Crop Outlook

For the short term, weather no longer dominates physical availability for the 2026 crop in Northwest Europe, as lifting is largely complete and stocks are moving into storage. The main risk now lies in storage quality under the legacy of this year’s drought: pressure from defects and size distribution could reduce net usable volumes over time. Irrigated fields are likely to perform better in storage than non‑irrigated ones, reinforcing regional quality differences within the Dutch and Belgian supply.

Trading Outlook

  • Growers: With the KT Index only slightly weaker and Belgapom Fontane flat at 20.00 EUR/dt, holding sound stocks looks justified, but it is prudent to sell quality‑risk lots earlier to avoid storage losses eating into positive price levels.
  • Processors: Maintain close monitoring of contract execution and quality; consider selectively extending coverage where above‑average raw material quality can be secured without paying significant premiums over current benchmarks.
  • Traders & packers: Focus on logistics and quality segregation. In a crop that is smaller but still near average, margin will hinge on differentiating high‑quality, irrigated lots from more stressed parcels rather than on chasing large nominal price moves.

3‑Day Regional Price Indication

  • Belgium (Belgapom Fontane): Around 20.00 EUR/dt, with a stable bias as supply and demand remain broadly balanced.
  • Netherlands (processing/free market): Quotations are firm but largely sideways, with limited free volumes and contracts dominating nearby physical flows.
  • Central Europe (potato starch, FCA Lodz): Potato starch prices at 0.625 EUR/kg FCA Lodz signal a steady processed segment with no immediate downside pressure from raw potato availability.
