Organic Pepper Eases from Recent Highs as Indian Supply Gradually Unlocks
Latest pepper price update for India and Sri Lanka: organic FOB offers ease slightly as tight local supply and strong demand keep underlying market firm.

Supply & Demand
Domestic black pepper prices across key mandis in Kerala and Karnataka remain high in local currency, with median wholesale levels around the mid‑₹60,000s to high‑₹60,000s per quintal, supported by strong festive demand and limited farmer selling. IPSTA-reported Kochi rates near ₹69,000–₹72,000 per 100 kg underline the tightness in high-grade stocks at southern terminals.
Earlier this season, trade sources noted deficient and erratic rainfall in pepper belts of Karnataka, Kerala (Idukki) and Tamil Nadu, raising concerns about 2026–27 output and prompting stockists to hold inventory. At the same time, high local prices and currency depreciation have made Indian pepper relatively expensive in export markets, encouraging some buyers to switch to Vietnam for conventional grades while still paying a premium for certified organic origins.

Fundamentals & Weather
India and Sri Lanka are in the late phase of the southwest monsoon and transition toward northeast monsoon, a period often marked by heavy, localized showers in the Western Ghats and Sri Lanka’s wet zone. While current daily forecasts point to scattered rain rather than extreme events, the cumulative impact of earlier irregular rainfall patterns has already been factored into supply expectations in Karnataka and Kerala.
In Sri Lanka, the southwest monsoon (Yala) season is winding down, and no fresh weather shocks with direct impact on pepper harvests have been reported in the last few days. Overall fundamentals therefore remain defined by structurally tight regional supply, high internal consumption in India, and constrained availability of organic-certified lots, even as short-term export prices show mild correction from very high rupee benchmarks.
Short-Term Outlook & Trading Ideas
- Exporters in India (organic): Use the current 0.05–0.1 EUR softening in FOB New Delhi organic black and white pepper to close nearby contracts, but retain some length for Q4 in view of still‑firm domestic mandi prices and ongoing festival demand.
- Buyers in Europe & Middle East: Consider incremental coverage in organic Indian and Sri Lankan pepper at today’s slightly lower EUR levels, but avoid over‑committing as any significant improvement in Indian arrivals post‑monsoon could cap further upside.
- Blenders and grinders in India: For conventional pepper, the small uptick in FOB New Delhi suggests further downside is limited; stagger purchases, using any brief local currency pull-backs rather than waiting for a major correction that fundamentals do not currently justify.
3‑Day Regional Price Indication (Direction Only)
- India (FOB New Delhi, organic pepper): Prices likely to move sideways to slightly firm, tracking tight Kerala/Karnataka spot markets despite recent minor EUR softening.
- Sri Lanka (FOB Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte, organic green): Prices expected to remain mostly steady over the next three days amid balanced export interest and no new weather disruptions.
