Concise rapeseed market update: flat MATIF curve around 530–560 EUR/t, softer French and Ukrainian physical prices, and tighter but not bullish global balance.

Rapeseed prices are stabilising after recent weakness, with Euronext futures flat along the curve and modest gains in ICE canola. Physical premiums in the EU and Black Sea are softening, reflecting ample nearby availability but lingering concerns about 2026/27 weather and global supply. The market is currently trading a balance between comfortable short‑term supply and medium‑term weather and policy risks. On Euronext, rapeseed contracts from November 2026 to May 2028 cluster in a narrow band around the low‑ to mid‑500s EUR/t, signalling a broadly flat forward curve and limited carry. In the physical market, French FOB and Ukrainian FCA/CPT values have eased over the last two weeks, mirroring pressure from growing Canadian and Australian supplies and indicating a more competitive export environment for EU origins. At the same time, firmer crude oil and vegetable oil markets have recently lent some support to canola and related oilseeds, helping to put a tentative floor under prices.

Prices

Rapeseed futures on Euronext (MATIF) are essentially unchanged, with the November 2026 contract last quoted at 527.50 EUR/t and February 2027 at 555.25 EUR/t. Further out, May 2027 trades at 557.00 EUR/t and August 2027 at 533.00 EUR/t, while November 2027 is around 536.00 EUR/t, underlining a very flat curve and limited term structure signals.

Out on the 2028 strip, February, May and November 2028 futures hover between 535.50 and 538.25 EUR/t, before a dip to 482.25 EUR/t in August 2028 and a rebound to 495.75 EUR/t in November 2028. This pattern suggests the market is cautiously pricing some new‑crop downside followed by partial recovery, but overall volatility across listed maturities remains low.

In North America, ICE canola futures closed higher on October 30, supported by strength in crude oil and other vegetable oils, with front months like November 2026 and January 2027 posting modest daily gains. Recent reports highlight that canola has followed comparable oils upward, even as global rapeseed and canola balances remain reasonably comfortable.

Physical quotations show additional softness. French rapeseed FOB Paris is indicated at 0.59 EUR/kg (down from 0.63 EUR/kg mid‑October), while Ukrainian 42% min oil rapeseed stands at 0.43 EUR/kg FCA Kyiv and 0.44 EUR/kg FCA Odesa. Grade‑1 rapeseed CPT Odesa is quoted at 0.432 EUR/kg, slightly above its mid‑month low but broadly stable over the last week, suggesting a pause in the downtrend.

Supply & Demand

Global fundamentals remain broadly comfortable in the near term. The completion of Canada’s canola harvest and upward‑revised production in Australia and Russia are adding exportable supplies onto the market, keeping a lid on rallies despite occasional support from energy and competing oils. Recent analysis underlines that rising rapeseed and canola exports from these origins are exerting competitive pressure on EU and Black Sea sellers.

In the EU, import needs for 2026/27 look somewhat lower than last season following a decent domestic crop, even though official estimates still point to only modest yield gains and little scope for acreage expansion. Earlier in the marketing year, EU rapeseed imports were already running behind last year’s pace, underscoring a slightly tighter but not structurally bullish balance.

Ukrainian exports continue to act as a key balancing factor for European crushers. Stable CPT Odesa values around 0.432 EUR/kg indicate that logistics and demand are currently in alignment, with neither severe congestion nor acute scarcity. This steady Black Sea flow helps explain the flatness of the MATIF curve and the limited carry between spot and forward months.

Weather & Crop Conditions

Weather risk is shifting from old‑crop harvest to new‑crop establishment. The latest European crop monitoring updates highlight that low soil moisture in several drought‑affected regions is hampering rapeseed emergence and early winter development, leading to heterogeneous stands. While it is still early in the season, such issues can increase yield risk if not corrected by improved precipitation in November and December.

Elsewhere, major exporters such as Canada and Australia have largely completed harvest under generally favourable conditions, reinforcing the availability of high‑quality seed for export. For the coming weeks, traders will watch short‑term rainfall patterns across Western and Central Europe: a sustained dry spell would support new‑crop premiums, whereas widespread rains could quickly ease establishment concerns and cap rallies.

Fundamentals & Positioning

The combination of a flat Euronext curve, low daily price changes and moderate open interest suggests a market in balance rather than in deficit. On ICE, recent Commitments of Traders data show managed money still holding a net long in canola but trimming exposure, consistent with reduced conviction after a harvest‑driven sell‑off and the latest bounce tied to energy prices.

Crude oil remains an important cross‑asset driver. Heightened geopolitical tensions and the associated rise in crude have recently lifted soyoil, palm oil and canola, with European rapeseed tracking these moves. Nonetheless, the structural picture of adequate seed availability and only moderately growing crush demand implies that rallies driven solely by energy markets may be fragile without concurrent weather or policy shocks.

Trading Outlook

  • Producers (EU, Ukraine): Consider layering in sales on nearby futures and physical for Q4 2026–Q1 2027 while MATIF trades above 530 EUR/t and French FOB near 0.59 EUR/kg, using options to retain upside in case of a weather‑driven spike.
  • Crushers: Current flat curves and soft physical premiums favour extending coverage modestly into early 2027, especially from Black Sea origins, but avoid over‑hedging given ongoing weather uncertainty for the 2027 harvest.
  • Traders: Look for relative value between EU and Canadian contracts; strength in ICE canola versus stable MATIF may offer opportunities for inter‑market spreads if crude‑led rallies outpace fundamental support in North America.

3‑Day Directional Outlook

  • Euronext rapeseed: Sideways to slightly firm, with support from external vegetable oils but capped by comfortable nearby supply.
  • French FOB physical: Mild downside risk as export competition from Canada and Ukraine intensifies, barring a sharp move higher in energy markets.
  • Ukrainian FCA/CPT values: Largely stable, tracking freight and currency, with only limited near‑term deviation expected.
