Rapeseed steadies as Australian record crop meets resilient EU prices

Rapeseed prices hold firm in Europe despite pressure from record Australian canola, softer soy and palm complex, and weaker crude. Concise market outlook and trading view.

Rapeseed is holding comparatively firm in Europe despite pressure from a record Australian canola crop, weaker crude oil and softer soy and palm markets, while Canadian canola retreats and German cash prices ease slightly. The rapeseed complex is currently pulled between ample global oilseed supply and region‑specific supports. A record US soybean harvest and falling palm oil and crude oil prices are weighing on the broader vegetable oil space, prompting fund liquidation in canola. At the same time, European rapeseed futures on Euronext remain resilient, supported by local demand and weather risks to EU crop establishment, while German physical prices and ICE canola in Winnipeg post modest losses. Ukrainian and French cash rapeseed offers signal mild downside adjustment but no collapse. The outlook hinges on how quickly record Australian canola and strong North American supplies translate into export flows over the coming weeks.

Prices

Euronext rapeseed futures closed steady on October 29, with the November 2026 contract at 528.75 EUR/t and the May 2027 contract at 554.75 EUR/t, broadly unchanged on the day and consolidating recent gains after a sharp rise earlier in the week. Despite this pause, nearby European rapeseed is up around 6–9% on the week, reflecting firm regional demand and weather‑related risk premia.

In contrast, Canadian canola futures on ICE Winnipeg ended the session with small losses across the forward curve; January 2027 settled at 783.10 CAD/t and March 2027 at 794.90 CAD/t, as speculative funds continued to trim long positions in the absence of fresh bullish news. German cash market prices for rapeseed have eased slightly, mirroring the softer tone in the physical market despite the relative strength on Euronext.

Current cash indications from Ukraine and France show mild softening but not a disorderly sell‑off. In Ukraine, rapeseed 42% min oil, 98% purity, FCA Kyiv is quoted at 0.43 EUR/kg (down from 0.44 EUR/kg a week earlier), and FCA Odesa at 0.44 EUR/kg (previously 0.45 EUR/kg). Rapeseed grade 1, < 35 mcm, CPT Odesa is assessed at 0.432 EUR/kg, broadly stable over the past few sessions after recovering from mid‑month lows around 0.401 EUR/kg. French rapeseed FOB Paris is indicated at 0.63 EUR/kg, flat versus mid‑October.

Supply & Demand

The global oilseed complex is currently dominated by expectations of a record US soybean harvest, which is weighing on Chicago futures and indirectly pressuring the broader oilseeds market. Farmers in the United States are close to completing their soybean harvest and are rushing to bring in the remaining fields, while export sales remain robust: recent weekly US soybean export bookings reached around 2.58 million tonnes, within expectations and sharply above year‑ago levels, with China the largest buyer.

On the rapeseed and canola side, supply signals are distinctly bearish. In Australia, a record canola crop is unfolding, with the Australian Oilseeds Federation now estimating the 2026–27 harvest at 8.59 million tonnes. This would exceed the previous record from 2022/23 by 7.7%, sit 10% above last year, and stand about 7% above the five‑year average. The revision from 7.93 to 8.59 million tonnes reflects predominantly favourable growing conditions and a near‑record sown area of 4.13 million hectares, with average yields around 2.08 t/ha and record crops forecast in Victoria, South Australia and Western Australia.

Canada has also completed its canola harvest, and strong export potential from both Canada and Australia, combined with steady Ukrainian rapeseed shipments, is adding to global availability and exerting pressure on prices along the export chain. However, European import demand for rapeseed remains significant, while low soil moisture in parts of the EU is hampering new‑crop rapeseed establishment and supporting a weather premium in MATIF values. Overall, the near‑term balance tilts towards comfortable to heavy global supply, but with meaningful regional tightness and weather risk in Europe.

Fundamentals & External Drivers

Vegetable oil fundamentals are currently mixed. On the one hand, weaker crude oil prices and a multi‑session decline in Malaysian palm oil futures weigh on the biodiesel and edible oil complex, translating into headwinds for rapeseed and canola. On the other, European biodiesel demand and lingering concerns over EU rapeseed acreage and establishment keep a structural support under European prices. Reports of potential Malaysian policy changes, including a temporary suspension of crude palm oil export taxes to work through high stocks, represent an additional bearish risk for vegetable oils if implemented.

Speculative positioning is a key short‑term driver. In canola, managed money has been reducing long exposure on ICE Winnipeg, contributing to the recent grind lower in futures despite relatively stable physical demand. Conversely, European rapeseed has attracted buying interest, with the MATIF–WCE canola spread widening sharply over the past week as Europe firmed while Canadian values softened. Macro conditions also play a role: firmer expectations of tighter monetary policy in the US and Europe have strengthened the US dollar and weighed on risk assets, which can temper speculative appetite across commodities.

Weather Snapshot

In Australia, the record canola outlook is underpinned by largely favourable weather and sufficient rainfall across key producing regions. Recent forecasts highlighted widespread rain of 15–50 mm over eastern and southern Australia (Victoria, South Australia, and southern and central New South Wales) in the week of October 22–29, supporting late‑season moisture for canola and winter crops.

By contrast, parts of the European Union are grappling with low soil moisture, which is complicating the establishment of winter rapeseed and underpinning a risk premium in MATIF futures. Should dryness persist into November, it could cap downside in European rapeseed despite globally ample supply; conversely, a shift to more regular rainfall would likely remove some of this weather premium.

Trading Outlook (next 2–4 weeks)

  • Bias: Mildly bearish to sideways globally, but relatively firmer in Europe versus export origins, as record Australian canola and strong North American supplies meet resilient EU demand and local weather risks.
  • For crushers in the EU: Consider gradually extending cover on Q1–Q2 2027 rapeseed needs on dips towards current MATIF levels, given supportive biodiesel demand and weather uncertainty for the new crop.
  • For Ukrainian and Black Sea sellers: Use current flat‑price resilience and active export channels to advance sales, especially for higher‑quality, 42% oil lots, before heavier Australian and Canadian export flows intensify competition in early 2027.
  • For importers in MENA and Asia: Monitor the MATIF–WCE canola spread; if European rapeseed remains at a premium, shifting a portion of coverage towards Australian and Canadian canola could capture better value as their export programs ramp up.
  • Risk factors: A sharper drop in crude oil or confirmation of Malaysian palm oil tax relief would be notably bearish for rapeseed, while a deterioration in EU crop conditions or logistical disruptions in Black Sea exports would support prices.

3‑Day Regional Price Indications / Direction

  • Euronext (MATIF) rapeseed: After consolidating around 528–555 EUR/t across nearby contracts, prices are likely to trade sideways with a slight upward bias if EU weather concerns persist.
  • ICE Winnipeg canola: Short‑term tone remains slightly negative as funds continue to lighten longs; modest further downside is possible unless crude oil or soy complex sentiment improves.
  • Black Sea (Ukraine) rapeseed cash: FCA/CPT values around 0.43–0.44 EUR/kg are expected to remain broadly stable in the next few days, with only minor adjustments following futures and freight moves.
