Soy Complex Under Pressure as Black Sea Normalization Weighs on US Exports

Soybean futures and soy oil extend declines on Black Sea export normalization hopes, strong US export sales and mixed weather in Brazil shaping short‑term outlook.

Soybean futures and products are easing for a third consecutive session, pressured by weaker wheat, sliding palm oil and expectations of more normal Black Sea exports that intensify competition in vegetable oils and meals. The soy complex is consolidating after strong US export sales earlier in October and firm physical premiums in Europe’s rapeseed and canola markets. CBOT soybeans, soymeal and especially soyoil are trading mildly lower across the forward curve, while cash soybean indications from China and Ukraine remain slightly firmer versus mid‑month. Weather risks are shifting to South America, with Brazil’s key soybean states seeing recurring thunderstorms that broadly support planting, though heavy local downpours can briefly slow fieldwork.

Prices

CBOT soybeans are extending their pullback, with the nearby January 2027 contract at 1,231.50 US‑cent/bu, down 6.50 cents (‑0.53%) on the day. The forward curve is only modestly upward‑sloping, with March 2027 at 1,240.75 and May 2027 at 1,250.25 US‑cent/bu, each 0.34–0.42% lower versus yesterday, signaling a soft, but not panicked, repricing.

In products, CBOT soyoil is leading losses: front‑month December 2026 trades at 64.74 US‑cent/lb, down 0.82 cents (‑1.25%), with similar 1.1–1.3% declines out to mid‑2027. Soymeal is comparatively resilient; December 2026 is only 0.27% lower at 334.80 USD/short ton, while deferred 2027 contracts are flat to slightly higher, reflecting still‑solid feed demand.

Physical soybean indications in EUR show a mildly firmer undertone versus mid‑October. Recent quotes include Soybeans yellow, organic CN FOB Beijing at 0.88 EUR/kg (up from 0.85 EUR/kg on 21 October), conventional yellow CN FOB Beijing at 0.77 EUR/kg (0.74 EUR/kg on 21 October), and GMO‑free soybeans UA CPT Odesa at 0.396 EUR/kg (up from 0.387 EUR/kg on 26 October). Standard soybeans from the US No. 2 grade remain indicated around 0.58 EUR/kg FOB Washington D.C. on the latest update.

Supply & Demand Drivers

The current downside in soybean futures is closely tied to broader grain and oilseed sentiment. US soybeans are tracking a weaker wheat board, while traders increasingly price in a gradual normalization of Russian and Ukrainian grain and oilseed exports via the Black Sea. Increased sunflower oil flows would directly compete with soyoil in key consuming regions, dampening demand for US origin vegetable oils and potentially limiting crush margins.

Despite this, recent export demand for US soybeans has been strong. USDA export sales data show net soybean sales of about 2.84 million tonnes for the week ending 15 October, driven by large Chinese purchases of roughly 2.18 million tonnes for 2026/27 delivery. This strong early‑season buying phase underpins nearby demand but also raises the bar for sustaining the pace later in the marketing year.

On the supply side, USDA’s latest outlook increased the 2026/27 US soybean production forecast to 4.56 billion bushels on a higher yield estimate of 53.1 bu/acre, easing balance sheet tightness at the margin. Globally, anticipated record or near‑record crops in Brazil – if realized – and the prospect of more stable Black Sea logistics both reinforce a medium‑term picture of adequate supply, even if localized logistics and weather issues persist.

Fundamentals & Product Spreads

The internal structure of the soy complex shows a bearish tilt in oils versus a steadier meal market. Soyoil futures are correcting as traders factor in potential competition from increased sunflower oil exports out of the Black Sea and persistent weakness in Malaysian palm oil, where futures have fallen for three consecutive sessions and opened lower again today amid pressure from Chinese Dalian and CBOT markets.

Soymeal, by contrast, trades near flat to fractionally higher across many 2027 and 2028 positions, suggesting end‑user coverage in feed markets remains active. The relative resilience of meal versus oil is also consistent with expectations of robust livestock and poultry feed demand, even as discretionary biofuel‑driven demand for vegetable oils faces more price‑sensitive buyers.

Chinese Dalian No. 1 soybeans are slightly weaker but orderly, with the January 2027 contract down around 0.19% at 5,392 CNY/t and similar modest declines across the 2027 strip. This, together with firmer CFR/FOB premiums observed in the cash market, points to an environment where futures are soft but physical demand in Asia is still absorbing supply at slightly higher basis levels.

Weather & Crop Outlook

Weather risk is shifting decisively to South America. In Brazil’s key soybean states of Mato Grosso, Goiás, Mato Grosso do Sul and Paraná, forecasters expect recurring thunderstorms, with Mato Grosso alone projected to receive around 1.15 inches of rain in the next five days and additional, though lighter, totals thereafter. These patterns broadly support planting and early development but can cause short‑term fieldwork delays and localized flooding.

In Argentina, climatological patterns for late October typically favor warmer, convective conditions with the majority of rainfall concentrated in the October–March warm season. While no acute nationwide weather shock is evident in the very short term, traders remain sensitive to any signs of emerging dryness or excessive rain in the core Pampas region given its importance for global meal and oil supplies.

Overall, near‑term weather currently leans neutral‑to‑slightly supportive for production potential in South America, which—combined with the higher US yield estimate—reinforces the perception of comfortable global availability, limiting the upside for futures unless a clear adverse pattern develops.

Trading Outlook (1–4 Weeks)

  • Flat‑to‑soft board, firm basis: With CBOT soybeans, soyoil and palm oil all under modest pressure while physical premiums in key origins like China and Ukraine remain elevated, the near‑term configuration favors a scenario of softer futures but comparatively firm basis in high‑demand corridors.
  • Watch Black Sea headlines: Any concrete confirmation of sustained, secure export corridors for Russian and Ukrainian oilseeds or vegetable oils would likely extend pressure on soyoil and cap rallies in the broader soy complex.
  • Export sales and South America weather: Weekly USDA sales and South American rainfall forecasts are the main catalysts. Strong follow‑through in US export bookings combined with any emerging weather issue in Brazil or Argentina could quickly stabilize or reverse the current downtrend.
  • Strategy hints: End‑users may look to scale into coverage on further breaks in nearby futures, especially in meal. Producers and inventory holders could consider light hedging on rallies, given the comfortable global supply outlook and rising competition from alternative vegetable oils.
