Table potato demand in Germany remains steady with stable prices, while EU yields fall and Dutch processing runs high. Outlook, drivers and trading tips.

Retail and packer demand for table potatoes is running steadily, keeping the physical market well-organised despite a structurally smaller 2026 EU crop. Spot prices for table and processing potatoes are broadly stable in Germany and the Netherlands, with only marginal corrections in individual varieties, while potato starch quotations in Poland are flat but underpinned by tighter raw material. Consumer promotions currently focus on smaller retail packs rather than large bags, which supports regular off-take without triggering visible price spikes. Most demand is still being covered directly from fields and very fresh stored batches. Some sweat-damaged lots are expected to appear shortly and will likely carry storage-cost mark-ups, but volumes look manageable. Overall, both the fresh and processing segments are balancing consistent demand against reduced EU yields and delayed harvest progress in later varieties.

Prices

German table potato quotations remain largely unchanged, with the bulk of the market trading in an orderly band of 26–30 EUR/dt. Within the processing segment, latest price indications show:

  • Fontane on 29 October 2026 at 22.00 EUR/dt (range 22.00–23.30 EUR/dt), down 0.50 EUR/dt, suggesting only mild easing from recent highs.
  • Innovator at 27.50 EUR/dt (27.50–28.30 EUR/dt), unchanged, confirming a firm tone for top processing quality.
  • Other processing varieties at 22.50 EUR/dt (22.50–25.50 EUR/dt), also stable.
  • French fries raw material price index at 24.75 EUR/dt, just 0.16 EUR/dt lower, underscoring a sideways market rather than a real correction.

In the Netherlands, recent PotatoNL quotations show a similar picture of firm but not overheated prices, with only small week-on-week moves in individual categories and export lots still well bid.

Potato starch offers at Lodz, Poland (FCA) are reported stable at 0.625 EUR/kg, unchanged through multiple updates in October 2026, indicating that processors are well covered for now despite the tighter tuber supply.

Supply & Demand

Domestic demand from German packing stations and food retailers remains “orderly and steady.” Promotional activity is concentrated on smaller consumer packs, matching ongoing cost-of-living driven shopping patterns elsewhere in Europe, where buyers tend to purchase smaller units more frequently.

On the supply side, the 2026 EU potato harvest is significantly smaller. Latest assessments indicate average EU yields about 12% below 2025, mainly due to drought in Germany and France, while the Netherlands benefits from slightly better yields after recent rains. Planting area is also estimated roughly 10% lower year on year, further constraining total production.

In Germany’s north, the main-crop harvest is largely completed, with only residual areas left to lift, whereas parts of North Rhine-Westphalia still have fields to be harvested. This staggered progress keeps some fresh supply flowing directly from the field. In contrast, Dutch processors have run their lines hard: September processing volume reached around 308,800 t, up on both the previous month and the prior year, supported heavily by raw material sourced from Germany and Belgium.

Over the last twelve months, Dutch processors handled 3.59 million t, still about 7.4% less than the previous 12‑month period, reflecting how smaller 2026 EU crops and the tail of 2025 stocks are interacting. Foreign-origin potatoes now account for roughly 47% of Dutch processing intake, highlighting the growing cross-border pull on German and Belgian supplies.

Fundamentals & Weather

Market fundamentals remain broadly supportive. Fresh consumption and retail sales across Northern Europe are stable to slightly improving as colder weather sets in, with good demand especially for pre-pack quality that commands a premium. Most fresh table demand can still be met from field-run and very fresh stored lots, limiting any immediate upward pressure on prices.

However, some sweat-damaged batches are expected to emerge from storage soon and will need to be sold with surcharges of about 5 EUR/dt to cover higher handling and storage costs. This may create a two-tier market, where sound, storable lots remain tightly held while quality-risk lots are discounted or diverted into flakes, starch and other processing channels.

Weather-wise, recent 20–40 mm of rain across Northern Europe has improved lifting conditions for remaining crops, especially in later-maturing processing varieties, although harvesting of those later types is still reported as delayed. In the broader EU, the combination of summer drought and heat has already locked in lower yields and, in some regions, smaller average tuber sizes, constraining the volume of potatoes that meet strict processing specifications.

Outlook & Trading Ideas

Given stable retail demand, reduced EU supply and still-disciplined processor buying, the near-term price outlook for both table and processing potatoes is sideways to moderately firm. Any significant market break appears unlikely in the immediate term, barring a negative surprise on storage quality.

  • Growers / sellers: Consider holding back top-quality, well-curing lots if storage conditions are secure, as ongoing tight EU supply and steady processor demand should continue to underpin prices into winter. Move sweat-prone or borderline quality batches early, accepting discounts or surcharges where necessary to avoid later losses.
  • Processors: Maintain disciplined, phased procurement strategies. With Dutch plants already processing more than last year in September and leaning heavily on German and Belgian raw material, securing sufficient contracted volumes with strong quality parameters remains crucial.
  • Retailers & packers: Continue to favour smaller consumer pack promotions, which align with current consumer behaviour and help smooth purchase volumes without requiring higher headline prices.
  • Starch buyers: With FCA Lodz potato starch stable at 0.625 EUR/kg and underlying tuber supply tight, consider covering a portion of first‑quarter 2027 requirements while the market is flat but fundamentally supported.

3-Day Regional Price Indication

  • Germany (table potatoes): Prices expected to remain in the 26–30 EUR/dt corridor over the next three days, with only minor local deviations as remaining fields are lifted and early storage lots are sorted.
  • Northwest Europe (processing potatoes): Quotations for Fontane, Innovator and related fries varieties are likely to stay broadly stable around current levels, with any moves confined to narrow ranges as trade waits for clearer storage-quality signals.
  • Poland (potato starch, FCA Lodz): The 0.625 EUR/kg level is expected to hold steady in the very short term, reflecting balanced order books and adequate raw material coverage at processors.
