Sugar beet market: futures correction, EU prices still firm
Sugar beet & white sugar market update: ICE No.5 futures correct from October highs while EU FCA prices remain firm. Outlook, drivers and trading ideas.
Prices
The ICE White Sugar No.5 curve moved lower on November 2, 2026. The December 2026 contract settled at 509.40 USD/t, down 6.90 USD or 1.35% on the day, with March 2027 at 526.10 USD/t (-1.86%) and May 2027 at 532.40 USD/t (-1.90%). Further out, October 2027 closed at 522.90 USD/t (-1.64%), and contracts through August 2029 also posted declines of around 1.2–1.5%, confirming a broad, curve-wide correction rather than isolated nearby weakness.
This pullback extends late-October losses and comes after white sugar futures had traded in the 520–540 USD/t range, near recent highs. Over the last month, raw sugar benchmarks on ICE No.11 have dropped roughly 8%, but they remain about 30% above year-ago levels, underlining that the recent move is a correction from elevated prices, not a collapse.
In the EU physical market linked to beet sugar, FCA quotes remain firm but show initial softening at the margin. Recent offers for refined granulated sugar include: Lithuania (Marijampole) ICUMSA 45, EU Cat. II at 0.53 EUR/kg FCA (down from 0.54 EUR/kg on October 22); Poland (Kalisz) fine granulated at 0.58 EUR/kg and EU Cat. II/Kat EU2 grades at 0.57 EUR/kg FCA; Czech Republic icing sugar in Vyškov at 0.77 EUR/kg FCA, down from 0.78 EUR/kg on October 22. These levels indicate only modest easing despite futures corrections.

Supply & Demand
The current futures correction is primarily driven by expectations of ample global supplies rather than a beet-specific shock. Brazilian hedging activity and an acceleration of India’s cane crush have contributed to downward pressure on both raw and white sugar benchmarks. At the same time, crude oil prices remain elevated, limiting any aggressive shift away from ethanol in major producers and capping the downside.
For sugar beet regions, especially the EU, the combination of a seasonally advancing beet campaign and still-tight product stocks is keeping regional refined prices supported. Market reports point to a flattening white sugar futures curve, indicating easing tightness but not a return to surplus conditions. The sustained premium of white sugar over raws underlines persistent demand for refined product, much of it beet-based in Europe.

Fundamentals & Weather
Over the past year, white sugar prices on ICE have gained more than 20%, and raw sugar remains about 30% above year-ago levels. This reflects two campaigns of weather disruptions in key cane origins and modest beet area and yield adjustments in Europe. Current price action suggests the market is recalibrating from these highs as new-crop cane flows increase, but the structural balance is still tight compared with pre-2025 conditions.
Recent weather in major beet-producing regions of the EU has generally allowed fieldwork and harvesting to progress, with no acute, short-term threat flagged in the latest global sugar commentary. However, soil moisture and temperature conditions remain critical over the next weeks for late-lifted beets and sucrose accumulation, making any sudden cold spells or excessive rains a potential volatility trigger for white sugar and beet processors.
Outlook & Trading Ideas
With December 2026 ICE No.5 at 509.40 USD/t and the curve gently downward sloping into 2029, the market is signaling a transition from extreme tightness toward a still-firm but more balanced environment. Near-term volatility is likely to be driven by flows from Brazil, India’s export and crush policies, and final yield assessments in EU beet regions. Physical EU FCA prices around 0.53–0.62 EUR/kg remain well supported versus early October levels, underscoring robust local demand.
- Beet growers and processors: Consider incremental forward sales of 2026/27 output on rallies, as current futures and FCA levels still embed a significant risk premium versus long-term averages.
- Industrial buyers: Use the current futures correction to cover medium-term beet sugar needs, but stagger purchases given lingering weather and policy risks.
- Traders: Monitor the white/raw spread and the shape of the ICE No.5 curve; additional flattening could signal further normalization, while any renewed steepening may reflect weather or policy shocks in beet or cane regions.
3‑day directional view (futures & EU FCA)
- ICE White Sugar No.5 (Dec 26–May 27): Bias mildly sideways to lower after the recent break, with scope for technical consolidation around the 500–520 USD/t area.
- EU refined beet sugar FCA (LT, PL, CZ): Prices expected to remain broadly stable to slightly softer as the beet campaign advances and futures stay under recent highs.
