Supply & Demand Context
South African SAFEX sunflower futures are edging higher across the curve, diverging from the broader oilseed complex where US soybeans and Euronext rapeseed weakened on harvest pressure and a firmer US dollar. This reflects relatively tighter regional availability and ongoing demand from crushers despite cheaper competing proteins and oils.
Globally, oilseed fundamentals are mixed. The US soybean market is under pressure from rising harvest supplies and currency headwinds, which also weighed on rapeseed in Europe and Canadian canola. Meanwhile, palm oil futures in Malaysia fell by nearly 2% and crude oil prices also eased, tempering cost-push support from the energy side. At the same time, Argentine sunflower oil FOB values remain elevated versus palm and soybean oil, underscoring the continued premium status of sunflower oil in the global vegoil basket.
EU import data indicate slightly weaker oilseed and vegoil inflows overall but show sunflower still firmly positioned in the mix. Rapeseed imports into the EU since season start are about 3% below last year, with Ukraine remaining the dominant external supplier. Soybean and soya meal imports are also lower year on year, and palm oil arrivals have fallen even more sharply, down about 21%. This creates space for sunflower oil to maintain or even expand market share despite high relative pricing.

Fundamentals & Regional Price Signals
Physical sunflower seed indications in the Black Sea region are relatively steady. Ukraine FCA and FOB quotations show only modest declines compared with early October, suggesting that harvest pressure is largely absorbed and logistics, while still challenged, are functioning. Separate freight and risk premia persist due to ongoing attacks on Black Sea vessels, limiting the ability of crushers in Russia and Ukraine to fully exploit higher global demand for sunflower oil and meal.
In Europe, Bulgarian and Moldovan sunflower seed and kernel prices have moved sideways to slightly higher. Bulgarian striped sunflower seeds FOB Sofia at 0.75 EUR/kg and bakery kernels in Berlin at 1.08 EUR/kg highlight solid demand for confection and bakery segments, especially in Western Europe. In contrast, Ukrainian sunflower kernel meal FOB Odesa has softened marginally, mirroring the broader protein meal complex where soybean meal futures have also drifted lower on ample supply.
On the oil side, crude sunflower oil from Ukraine has eased slightly in CPT Odesa terms in October, even as international benchmarks show sunflower oil trading at a roughly 25–30% premium over palm oil and at a clear premium to soybean oil. This combination indicates some compression of crush margins at origin and keeps crushers sensitive to any decline in oil demand or further weakness in competing vegoils.
Weather & Crop Conditions
Weather in key Ukrainian sunflower regions around 28 October is seasonally cooler but generally benign. Forecasts call for mostly cloudy conditions with intermittent light rains, with more persistent showers only in some southern and eastern areas. Temperatures remain in a mild autumn range with no imminent frost threat, which is supportive for the tail end of harvest operations and crop transport.
Earlier in the season, localized yield losses were reported in conflict-affected southern oblasts such as Kherson, where both field access and logistics remain constrained. However, on the national level, Ukraine still harvested a sizeable sunflower crop in the previous season and retains its role as a critical origin for both seeds and oil. That said, any local escalation or infrastructure damage could quickly tighten exportable surpluses and reinforce the current premium structure in global sunflower oil.
3–5 Day Market Outlook & Trading Recommendations
- Flat price bias: With SAFEX futures trending modestly higher and Black Sea values broadly steady, the short-term bias is mildly firm. However, downside in the broader oilseed complex and vegoils limits the scope for aggressive rallies.
- Producers (Black Sea & EU): Consider incremental hedging of nearby sunflower seed and crude oil sales while SAFEX and premium kernel prices remain supported. Scale in hedges rather than locking in the full crop, given ongoing geopolitical and logistical upside risks.
- Crushers: Maintain disciplined seed procurement; current seed prices and slightly softer oil values are squeezing margins. Use any dips in global vegoil benchmarks or crude oil to extend cover, but avoid over-buying if palm and soybean oil weakness accelerates.
- Industrial and food buyers: For high-grade bakery and confection kernels, current quotes in Europe and China suggest firm underlying demand. Users may consider covering Q4 and early Q1 needs now, while leaving some flexibility for potential price relief if the soybean complex continues to weaken.
3-Day Regional Directional View
- South Africa (SAFEX sunflower): Slightly firmer to sideways as domestic fundamentals dominate over global soy/raps softness.
- Black Sea sunflower seeds & oil: Sideways with a mild upside bias; logistics and freight risk premia remain supportive despite soft energy markets.
- EU physical sunflower kernels: Sideways to marginally higher, especially for bakery and confection grades into Germany and other core demand centers.
