Sunflower Market Softens as Black Sea Harvest Pressure Builds

Concise sunflower market analysis: SAFEX moves, Black Sea harvest pressure, spot seed and kernel prices, plus short-term trading outlook.

Sunflower markets are easing into a harvest-driven, slightly softer phase, with Black Sea supplies building and SAFEX futures drifting lower on the 2027 strip. Physical seed and kernel prices show mild regional divergence: Ukraine and Bulgaria are edging down on new-crop availability, while Chinese origin and selected EU-delivered kernels hold small premiums. Processors enjoy improved crush margins as crude sunflower oil and meal values lag raw seed offers. Logistics in the Black Sea remain a structural risk, but current flows are sufficient to weigh on nearby prices.

Prices

SAFEX sunflower futures in South Africa reflect a gently weaker forward curve. The nearby November 2026 contract last settled at 10,427 ZAR/t, while March 2027 closed at 9,888 ZAR/t and May 2027 at 9,609 ZAR/t, underlining expectations of easier supply into 2027.

In the physical market, Black Sea sunflower seeds (black, 98% purity, origin UA) have softened: FOB Odesa stands at 0.394 EUR/kg, down from 0.408 EUR/kg in late October, while FCA Odesa trades at 0.38 EUR/kg and FCA Kyiv at 0.4 EUR/kg. Moldovan origin delivered Germany (FCA Rheinfelden Herten) is indicated at 0.45 EUR/kg.

Bulgarian seeds remain slightly firmer, with FCA Sofia black seeds at 0.44 EUR/kg and FOB striped confection at 0.75 EUR/kg. Chinese striped seeds (FOB Beijing) are quoted at 1.5 EUR/kg, confirming a wide origin spread. Hulled bakery kernels range from 0.9 EUR/kg FCA Dnipro to 1.08 EUR/kg FCA Berlin and 0.93 EUR/kg FCA Rheinfelden, while Chinese bakery kernels reach 1.22 EUR/kg FOB Beijing. Crude sunflower oil from Ukraine (CPT Odesa) is indicated at 1.032 EUR/kg, marginally below mid-October levels.

Supply & Demand

Harvest pressure is the dominant driver. Ukraine’s 2026 sunflower crop is projected at around 13–13.5 million tonnes, well above last season’s 10.5 million tonnes, with roughly 80% of area already harvested by late October. Strong yields after several weaker years are rebuilding regional export potential and underpinning the current price dip.

At the same time, overall oilseed production in Ukraine may reach about 20 million tonnes in 2026, reinforcing competition between sunflower, rapeseed and soybeans for crush capacity. Russian FOB Black Sea sunflower seed prices also point to steady export availability, with quotes around the high‑200s USD/mt range at the end of October. Global demand for sunflower oil is recovering only gradually, as competing soft oils remain attractively priced and some buyers continue to switch flexibly between sunflower and alternatives.

Fundamentals & Weather

The larger Black Sea crop coincides with still-functioning export logistics, albeit under elevated geopolitical risk. Recent assessments highlight that Ukraine’s 2026 harvest is among the strongest since 2021, improving domestic availability despite persistent disruptions. Ample seed supply, together with relatively subdued nearby demand, is enabling crushers to negotiate lower raw material prices.

Weather has turned less critical now that most sunflower fields are harvested, but earlier localized moisture deficits in southern and eastern Ukraine did not prevent overall production recovery. Short-term forecasts for key Black Sea growing regions show seasonally cooler, more stable conditions, with no major late-season threats for remaining fields or logistics currently visible. In this context, fundamentals are skewed slightly bearish for seeds, while kernels and high-spec confection qualities retain some price resilience.

4–6 Week Outlook & Trading Ideas

With the bulk of the Black Sea harvest already collected and export programs ramping up, the near-term balance points to continued mild downside or sideways movement for bulk seed prices, while kernels and value-added categories may decouple partially.

  • Seed buyers: Consider scaling into coverage for Q1–Q2 2027 on price dips, especially for Black Sea origins around current FCA/FOB levels, but avoid overbuying given the still‑unfolding size of the Ukrainian crop.
  • Producers in Black Sea/EU: Lock in margins where possible using SAFEX or other futures, as the 2027 strip below 10,000 ZAR/t signals limited upside unless weather or logistics deteriorate.
  • Kernels and confection segment: Maintain selective long exposure in premium kernels (EU-delivered and Chinese origin), where tighter supply and stable snack demand support firmer differentials versus bulk seed.
  • Crushers: Current differentials between seed and crude oil/meal are favorable; forward-selling oil against spot seed purchases can secure attractive crush margins if logistics risk is actively managed.
