Tight Northwest EU Potato Supply Lifts Free-Market Quotes into Late October
Northwest European potato prices firm on tight free supplies and early contract calls, while Polish potato starch stays flat. Concise outlook and trading ideas.
Prices
Belgian organisations Viaverda and Fiwap are now reporting slightly rising quotations and day prices for free potatoes. For the main processing varieties Fontane and Innovator, indications are currently around 20.00–22.50 EUR/dt, on average about 1.25 EUR/dt above the previous week, with particularly attractive, large-size lots occasionally fetching up to 25.00 EUR/dt. Innovator prices are assessed higher again, although few actual deals are concluded due to the scarcity of free lots and cautious buying.
In France, RNM today still shows Fontane unchanged at 21.00 EUR/dt (range 20.00–22.50 EUR/dt), but Innovator has been increased by 1.00 EUR to 23.00 EUR/dt, with a reported band of 22.00–25.00 EUR/dt. At the same time, PCA quotations for Fontane and Challenger on 27 October stand at 21.25 EUR/dt (20.00–22.50 EUR/dt), unchanged on the day, indicating a stable but firm Belgian market base. Dutch PotatoNL assessments from 26 October highlight the same tight undertone: Regular at 22.00 EUR/dt (+0.75), Export at 27.00 EUR/dt (+2.00), with Category 01 at 24.00 EUR/dt and Category 02 slightly easier at 28.50 EUR/dt (−1.00).

In the derivative segment, Polish potato starch (FCA Lodz) is currently indicated at 0.625 EUR/kg, unchanged for several weeks, underlining that downstream processing is presently absorbing higher raw material costs without a new leg up in finished product prices.
Supply & Demand
Farmers across Northwest Europe are mainly concentrating on finishing harvest and filling storage, rather than selling free volumes. This is particularly true for special varieties and large-size fractions, which are increasingly sought after by processors and packers. The combination of low 2026 yields and uncertainty over contract fulfilment is significantly restricting the supply of free potatoes.
Several processors are reportedly pulling forward contract volumes, reducing their need for additional spot purchases to the absolute minimum. Transactions are largely confined to lots that meet strict requirements on quality and grading, further tightening the effective free market. Export business is described as sluggish due to elevated price levels and the scarcity of large tubers, despite firm Dutch Export quotations.

Fundamentals & Weather
After a weather‑affected growing season and harvest with mixed conditions across Northwest Europe, the structural picture is clearly tighter than in previous years. A smaller planted area and lower yields have curtailed overall availability, particularly of processing potatoes. Market commentaries in Belgium and the Netherlands emphasise a price‑supportive environment with limited free supply rather than strong demand-led rallies.
Short‑term weather in Belgium and the Netherlands is now broadly favourable for final lifting and logistics. Forecasts from KMI and KNMI for the coming days point to mostly dry, calm autumn weather with daytime temperatures around 11–15°C, only isolated light showers and frequent morning mist. This should allow remaining fields to be cleared but is unlikely to meaningfully change the underlying tight supply situation for the 2026 crop.
4–6 Week Outlook & Trading Ideas
With quotations in Belgium, France and the Netherlands already reflecting a tight crop and limited free stocks, the near‑term balance of risks for prices remains skewed to the upside or at least sideways at firm levels. As contract volumes continue to be called forward, the window for meaningful spot availability could narrow further into early winter. However, stable starch prices and disciplined processor buying argue against an immediate sharp price spike in the absence of fresh supply shocks.
- Growers: Consider a staggered selling strategy for high‑quality, large-size lots, taking advantage of the current upward bias and potential for moderate further gains into early November, but guarding against storage and quality risks later in the season.
- Processors: Review contract call‑offs and minimum quality specs; where possible, secure additional cover for speciality and large-size lots on dips, while avoiding aggressive chasing of limited free volumes that could further inflate benchmarks.
- Exporters & Traders: Given muted export flows and high replacement costs, focus on niche destinations or quality‑driven trades rather than volume business; hedge exposure to further firmness via forward purchasing where logistics are secured.
3-Day Market Direction
- Belgium (PCA Fontane/Challenger): Stable to slightly firmer, with good chances of moderate mark‑ups before the weekend as tight free supply persists.
- Netherlands (PotatoNL Regular/Export): Firm undertone; Regular likely to hold recent gains, Export could see further incremental strength if export enquiries pick up.
- France (RNM Fontane/Innovator): Fontane stable at firm levels; Innovator biased higher after the latest increase, especially for premium quality lots.
