Weak Indian Monsoon Lifts Mustard Seed Prices and Risk Premium

Indian mustard seed prices edge higher as the weakest monsoon in a decade and falling tractor sales flag pressure on farm incomes, rabi sowing and exports.

Mustard seed prices from India are firming as the country’s weakest monsoon in around a decade and falling tractor sales signal stress on farm incomes, rabi sowing prospects and, ultimately, mustard availability. With Indian tractor sales down sharply month-on-month in September and the southwest monsoon having ended with a marked rainfall deficit, markets are starting to price in a higher weather and income risk premium for the upcoming mustard sowing. Export offers from New Delhi have been edging up in recent weeks, reflecting both tighter sentiment and a reluctance among farmers and traders to commit volumes before there is more clarity on soil moisture, reservoir levels and government policy around rabi crops and edible oils.

Prices

Indian mustard seed export quotations in New Delhi have trended moderately higher in recent weeks. Between 26 September and 3 October 2026, FOB prices in EUR moved as follows:

The data point to a mild but consistent uptrend across most grades since mid-September, coinciding with mounting concerns over rainfall deficits and their knock-on effects on farmer liquidity and sowing decisions.

Supply & Demand

The core fundamental driver at this stage is the weak Indian southwest monsoon. Latest assessments show a seasonal rainfall deficit of about 13% versus the long-period average, described as the driest monsoon in more than a decade and linked to El Niño conditions.   This reinforces the message from India-focused research houses that sub-par monsoon performance and low reservoir storage are likely to weigh on the upcoming rabi sowing season and rural demand.

For mustard specifically, the early warning is coming from machinery markets: Indian tractor sales in September fell by 12.6% compared with August, a drop that has been associated in financial press commentary with the weak monsoon. While this is not a direct measure of mustard supply, it is an important signal of pressure on farm incomes, input purchases and potentially on the intensity of sowing activities in the upcoming rabi season.

On the demand side, India remains a key producer and consumer of mustard and rapeseed oil within its broader vegetable oil balance. Global vegetable oil prices have been under upward pressure recently due to weather issues and geopolitical disruptions in other oilseed complexes, which increases the strategic importance of India’s mustard crop for domestic price stability.   Any meaningful shortfall in rabi mustard output would tighten both domestic availability and exportable surpluses.

Fundamentals & Weather Outlook

Mustard is a major rabi oilseed in India, highly sensitive to soil moisture at sowing and to winter temperature profiles during flowering and grain filling.   The combination of this year’s deficient southwest monsoon and concerns about El Niño-linked temperature anomalies raises two key fundamental risks: reduced area (if farmers shift to less moisture-sensitive or better-supported crops) and yield drag from a shorter, warmer winter.

Macroeconomic and agri-sector analysis from Indian agencies and rating firms underscores that the 2026 monsoon has been not just weak but also spatially and temporally distorted, with rainfall at 86‑87% of the long-period average and particularly poor performance in June.   This has already suppressed kharif sowing earlier in the season and, more importantly for mustard, has limited reservoir recharge in key producing states, leaving rabi sowing more dependent on any late-season precipitation and on irrigation infrastructure.

Looking ahead into October–November, climate and policy guidance highlights that if El Niño conditions persist through the early rabi window, they can constrain moisture availability and raise temperature risks for wheat and mustard.   At present, there is no firm evidence yet of a collapse in mustard planting intentions, but the combination of weaker farm incomes (as mirrored in the tractor sales data), uncertain weather and elevated input costs justifies a cautious stance on 2026/27 mustard output potential.

3–6 Month Market & Trading Outlook

Near-term price risks for mustard seeds skew moderately to the upside as markets digest the weak monsoon outcome and its implications for rabi sowing. The recent uptick in FOB New Delhi prices is modest in absolute terms but suggests that exporters and domestic stockists are increasingly reluctant sellers at earlier levels.

  • Importers / crushers: Consider advancing a portion of Q1 2027 mustard seed coverage while FOB values remain in a relatively narrow range; prioritize brown bold and micro qualities where price increases have been smaller in absolute terms.
  • Origin sellers: Maintain disciplined offer levels and avoid aggressive forward selling until clearer information on rabi planting and early crop conditions emerges; monitor policy signals on rabi MSPs and edible oil import management.
  • Traders: Bias toward buying on dips rather than selling rallies in the next 1–3 months, given asymmetric upside risk from any negative sowing or early-crop news flow.

Short-Term Directional View (Next 3 Trading Days)

  • FOB New Delhi mustard seeds, brown bold and brown micro: mildly bullish tone; prices likely to hold or edge higher in thin volumes.
  • FOB New Delhi mustard seeds, yellow bold and yellow micro: stable to firm, with buyers showing readiness to accept current offers amid weather-related uncertainty.
