The export of Iranian cumin dropped by about 65 percent in July this year compared to July last year. The most important reason for the decrease in the export of this product is the decline in supply due to the drop in production. One of the reasons for the stagnation of Iran’s export markets is the lack of attention to product quality and packaging.

According to the Iran customs statistics, the export of Iranian cumin was 17,174 kg worth 34,348 USD in July this year. The average price of Iranian cumin was 2 USD per kg this month. In the previous month, the largest export belonged to the export of green cumin. Pakistan has been the most significant customer of Iranian cumin in July.

The export of this crop has fallen in July this year compared to the same period last year. 50,000 kg of cumin worth 97,841 USD (1.96 USD per kilogram) were exported from Iran in July 2021. The export of this product declined by about 65 percent in July this year compared to July last year.

The decrease in the supply of cumin in July this year compared to last year is the main reason for the reduction in the export of this product. The drop in supply was due to the sharp decline in production this year compared to last year. Many cumin farms suffered damage this year, and the harvest amount was reduced due to the severe drought last summer as well as the weather tensions at the beginning of this year and the cold spring. The amount of production dropped by more than 60 percent compared to last year. This issue led to a decrease in supply and exports in July 2022 compared to the number of exports in July 2021.

The exported cumin is sifted, cleaned, and packed because the quality and packaging of the product are noticeable for buyers of cumin for export, which is not paid much attention to in Iran. So it is one of the reasons for the stagnation of Iran’s export markets. The smell of cumin is the most important criterion for measuring the quality of cumin. Cleanliness and purity are other factors for cumin quality.

Compared to last month, the cost of Iranian cumin has increased by 9 to 11 percent in the world markets. Two main reasons for the increase in the price of this Iranian export product in the world markets are the decrease in the foreign exchange rates in the Iranian market (due to an increase in hopes for the return of Iran and the USA to the 2015 nuclear agreement and the lifting of the sanctions of the USA against Iran), and the increase in export demand.
