Dried Dates; What Drives the Increase in Iranian Date Exports?

The export of Iranian dates has increased by about 25 percent compared to the previous month in February 2022. As Ramadan approaches, the export amount and the price of this product have risen in global markets.

According to Iran customs statistics, the export of Iranian dates was 44,236 tons worth 38,801,000 USD in the last month (February 2022). The average price of Iranian exported dates was 0.88 USD per kilogram in February. Of the total number of Iranian dates for export, 19,712 tons worth 21,951,000 USD belonged to Mazafati dates in February. Also, 7,922 tons worth 4,749,000 USD were allocated to Zahedi dates, 2,770 tons worth 3,050,000 USD belonged to Rabbi dates, and 4,632 tons worth 2,739,000 USD related to Kaloote dates. In addition, 716 tons worth 2,395,000 USD were allocated to Piarom dates, 3,578 tons worth 1,495,000 USD belonged to Sayer dates, and the rest is related to the export of other types of Iranian dates.

Iranian dates export has increased in February this year compared to the previous month (January 2022). In January, 35,498 tons worth 30,890,000 USD were exported from Iran. Compared to the previous month, export rates have risen by about 25 percent in February 2022. The export rate has increased in February compared to January due to the markets activation that is the export destination of Iranian dates, as well as the increase in orders after the New Year holidays and the Chinese New Year in January. Also, approaching Ramadan and increasing orders is another reason for raising the amount of Iranian dates exports in February compared to January this year.

In addition, the export rate of Iranian dates has increased slightly in February this year compared to the same period last year (February 2021). In February last year, 43,028 tons of various dates worth 37,090,000 USD were exported from Iran.

The export rate of Iranian dates has risen by 2.8 percent in terms of weight and by 4.6 percent in terms of export value in February this year compared to the same time last year. The reason for increasing the export rate of this crop in February 2022 is the higher quality of available products compared to February last year, which has risen the average price of each kilogram of dates for export by 2.3 percent. This price reaches 0.88 USD per kilogram from 0.86 USD per kilogram.

During the past month, the price of Iranian dates for export has gone up due to the increase in demand for this crop. The export and domestic demand for various dates have gone up due to the approaching Ramadan during the past month. Compared to last month, the price of Iranian dates has risen in global markets by 7.5 to 13 percent.
