In 2019-20 India exported nutmeg and mace valued at Rs. 13,280 lakhs. The leading importers were UAE, the US, and Nigeria. For the year 2019, India exported nutmeg worth USD 15.955.38,00 standing just after Indonesia.

According to Mordor Intelligence, the nutmeg market will grow at a CAGR of 3.6% between 2020 and 2025. Despite the COVID -19 pandemic, the demand for space continues to grow as the popularity of Asian cuisine globally is rising.

While Indonesia, India, and Guatemala lead the export market of nutmeg, the leading importers are European countries apart from the Middle East and the United States.

Though India has taken the second position in the nutmeg export market, the recent innovation of Nutmeg Desheller can prove to be a game-changer for Indian nutmeg exporters.

Decorticated nutmeg has high demand in the market, but getting the kernel is a tedious and time-consuming job and labour exhaustive and challenging. Mr Sachidanandan V R from Ernakulam (Cochin), Kerala, has invented the nutmeg deshelled that is easy to use and takes less time to produce the decorticated nutmegs.

With this innovation in place, if India increases its nutmeg production, it can easily increase its import. Moreover, nutmeg is an expensive spice, warrants a high return on export, which will benefit nutmeg farmers.
