This year, barberry harvest has increased by 20 per cent from the orchards of Isfahan province. Iran’s barberry exports have decreased by more than 27 per cent in October (September 23rd,2021 to October 22nd,2021) compared to last year’s same period. The price of Iranian barberry has increased significantly in the previous two months.

According to the Agricultural Organizations of Isfahan Province, barberry harvesting and processing began in late October of this year and lasted until early December. Barberry cultivation area is over 35 hectares in the province. It is predicted that more than 210 tons of barberry will be harvested out of the total amount, which will increase by 20 per cent compared to last year. The average production of barberry orchards is 6 tons per hectare in the province, which will be 1.5 tons in the form of dried barberry. The highest level of barberry cultivation in Isfahan province is related to Borkhar, Isfahan, and Fereydunshahr cities, respectively.

The export of Iranian barberry was 19,601 kg in October of this year. This number has decreased by about 27.4 per cent compared to the same period last year (October 2020), which was 27,000 kg. Also, the number of exports had decreased by 58 per cent compared to the month before previous (August 23rd,2021 to September 22nd,2021), which was 46,658 kg. Iraq was the most important importer of Iranian barberry in October by importing more than 44 per cent of this crop from Iran.

The price of Iranian barberry has increased significantly in the last two months. After a long period of price stability in the market. The most important reason for the increase in the price of Iranian barberry for export in the domestic and global markets is the decrease in the production of this crop in South Khorasan this year.

This decrease in production occurred due to severe drought this year. Also, the price of puffed barberry increased due to the lack of inventory in the market. Considering that the puffed barberry product will enter the market in the next 2 to 3 months of this year, it is predicted that the rise in the price of Iranian barberry will continue in the next 1 to 2 months in the domestic market. If the exchange rate of foreign currencies against the Rial is stable, the price of this product will increase in world markets. Compared to last month, the cost of Iranian puffed barberry has risen by 19 per cent, and the price of Iranian Sun-dried barberry has gone up by about 14.5 per cent.
