It is expected that 18,774 tons of apricots will be harvested from 2,425 hectares in Marand this year, of which 80 percent (more than 12,000 tons) will turn into dried apricots and Gheysi. Marand and Turkey’s Gheysi are the same sizes. However, the Gheysi of Marand is superior in terms of taste.

Gardeners in Marand have started harvesting apricots from 2,425 hectares of orchards as the second month of summer starts. The processing and production of dried apricots and Gheysi start as this valuable fruit is harvested around the orchards. 3,700 people are working in apricot production and processing in Marand city. On average, 1.5 people are working per hectare of the total apricot orchards of the city.

It is expected that the apricot production in Marand will reach 18,774 tons. 20 percent of this product is used fresh, and 80 percent  (more than 12,000 tons) turns into Gheysi or dried apricots. This product is traditionally dried in the sun or industrially. It is supplied to local and regional markets in local packaging. According to the weather condition of the region this year, the predictions of apricot harvest amount are coming true in the city.

Marand is one of the main centers of the production of apricots, dried apricots, and Gheysi. It also ranks first in the production of this crop in East Azarbaijan province. Gheysi and dried apricots of Marand are popular products in terms of quantity and quality in East Azarbaijan province and Iran. This product has a wonderful taste. Marand is located on the hillside, and the climatic conditions are suitable for agriculture, especially for apricots. The products produced are the first in terms of quality and taste in Marand and Iran. More than 17 types of apricots are organic and healthy in terms of quality in Marand.

Farmers of Marand are concerned about Gheysi production. They have kept the way of producing Gheysi and dried apricots through their ancestors from past years. Currently, based on their experience and traditional facilities, they are the first in the region and Iran in the production of Gheysi. The main difference between Marand Gheysi and Turkish Gheysi is its taste. Gheysi produced in Turkey are the same size as Marand.

The creation and development of transformation and complementary industries in the agricultural sector of the production centers leads to the production of crops with high food diversity. Now, Farmers of Marand sell the mentioned crops in bulk and with traditional packaging, which is not very profitable for them. One of the obstacles to products that are produced in East Azarbaijan province is the lack of branding.

Some products are produced at the global quality level and can be exported at a high level. But the lack of attention from authorities and investors has caused these important and valuable products to be neglected. If it is possible to brand the product in the name of Marand, it will have a lot of added value for farmers.

With approaching the beginning of the apricot harvest season and the production of dried apricots and Gheysi in Iran, the price of this product has decreased in the Iranian market due to the increase in supply. Compared to last month, the cost of Iranian dried apricots and Gheysi has dropped by 9 to 15 percent in the world markets.
