More than 50 per cent of Iranian barberry has been exported to Turkey in January 2022. The export amount of Iranian barberry has fallen by more than 30 per cent in January 2022 compared to the month before (December 2021) and January 2021.

The export amount of Iranian barberries was 47.675 kg last month (January 2022). The main destinations of Iran exports are Turkey, Bahrain, Iraq and Kuwait. The most significant destination of this product is Turkey which imports 50 per cent of Iranian barberry in January. In January 2022, 23.850 kg of barberry has exported to Turkey. The next destinations of Iran’s export after Turkey are the following countries, Bahrain with 9.694 kg, Iraq with 5.303 kg, and Kuwait with 3.392 kg. Barberry exports fell by 32 per cent in January 2022 compared to the previous month (December 2021), which was 70.563 kg. Reducing export demand due to the end of the New Year’s holiday is the main reason for decreasing exports in January 2022 compared to December 2021. It is expected that the export demand of Iranian barberry will rise in February and March with the entering of new crop puffed barberry into the market over this month.

Also, Iranian barberry exports have been reduced by about 30 per cent in January 2022 compared to the same period last year (January 2021). In January 2021, 68.347 kg of barberry had been exported from Iran. Declining market inventory due to reduced production is the reason for decreasing the barberry exports in January 2022 compared to January 2021. In addition, available product quality dropped in January 2022 compared to last year. The number of barberry harvests and their quality has decreased due to weather stress, frostbite of many barberry trees in spring, and summer drought. These cases have reduced the export demand and export rate in January 2022 compared to January 2021.

The price of various types of Iranian barberry for export has increased due to reduced market inventory over the past month. In the early weeks of this period, the price has risen. The cost of Iranian barberry for export stabilized over the past two weeks. Compared to last month, the price of puffed barberry for export has increased by 5,3 per cent, and the cost of sun-dried barberry for export has risen by 3,6 per cent.
