Cardamom market split: large cardamom softens, small cardamom holds firm

India’s cardamom market is diverging: large cardamom under pressure on new-crop arrivals, while small cardamom and export prices remain comparatively firm.

Large cardamom prices in India have corrected sharply on new-crop arrivals, while small cardamom remains comparatively firm, with lower grades even gaining over the past week. Export FOB prices out of New Delhi are edging higher, suggesting that downstream and overseas demand are still absorbing the increased primary-market flows. India’s spice complex is currently mixed, and cardamom is a clear example of this divergence. Large cardamom has retreated by roughly ₹300–325/kg over the past month as fresh supplies hit key producing markets, but selling pressure now appears to be easing at lower levels. In contrast, small cardamom has traded in a wide band depending on grade, with some support emerging in lower qualities. Recent auction and mandi data point to still-solid demand for green cardamom, while export quotations from New Delhi show a modest but broad-based uptick, indicating that the market is moving from a correction phase toward a more balanced, range-bound environment in the near term.

Prices

Domestically, large cardamom prices in India have fallen to around ₹1,400–1,425/kg after a steep decline of approximately ₹300–325/kg over the preceding month as new-crop arrivals expanded in producing centres. Small cardamom traded between roughly ₹2,600 and ₹3,900/kg, with lower grades gaining about ₹40–50/kg week on week while premium qualities stayed broadly steady.

Export-oriented quotations from New Delhi confirm a mildly firmer tone despite this domestic correction. On a FOB basis, organic cardamom whole 6.0–6.5 mm is indicated at 17.7 EUR/kg, organic 7.5–8 mm at 19.4 EUR/kg, and cardamom powder at 25.2 EUR/kg. Conventional whole cardamom has also edged higher, with 6.5–6.8 mm at 23.8 EUR/kg, 7–7.2 mm at 24.9 EUR/kg, 7.5 mm at 26.8 EUR/kg and 8 mm at 28.7 EUR/kg, all showing small week-on-week increases in late September.

Supply & Demand

Large cardamom’s recent weakness is primarily a supply story. New-crop arrivals have increased significantly in the main producing belts, pushing prices down toward ₹1,400/kg. However, reports indicate that selling pressure is starting to ease at these lower levels, implying that growers may resist further discounting if prices move much below current ranges.

For small cardamom, fundamentals appear firmer. Auction and mandi indications around the end of September and 1 October show upper-range prices for better grades and solid volumes traded, pointing to resilient domestic demand from food, beverage and confectionery segments. With the festival season underpinning consumption and export demand steady, the market for small cardamom is better balanced than for large cardamom.

Fundamentals & Weather

The broader spice basket in India is mixed: cinnamon and saffron remain under pressure, while cumin, turmeric, black pepper and chilli are broadly stable. Within this context, cardamom stands out for its internal divergence between large and small varieties. The steep correction in large cardamom has improved its relative value for blenders and packers, which could stimulate incremental buying if prices stabilise near current levels.

Weather in key South Indian growing regions has recently been seasonally active but without major new disruptions reported. As the current cardamom harvest window in higher-elevation areas progresses, any shift toward prolonged heavy rainfall or unseasonal dryness would quickly feed into quality and yield concerns, but for now the main driver is the arrival cycle rather than outright weather stress.

Short-Term Outlook & Trading Guidance

Market outlook from domestic trade suggests that large cardamom may start to find support after its recent steep correction, while small cardamom fundamentals remain comparatively firm. The next decisive trigger for spices more broadly is likely to be sowing decisions and post-festival demand signals, but for cardamom, near-term dynamics will revolve around how quickly arrivals taper from current levels.

  • Buyers (importers, blenders): Consider scaling into large cardamom on dips near current levels, as further sharp downside appears limited if selling pressure continues to moderate. For small cardamom, secure key grades early for Q4 needs, as lower qualities are already firmer.
  • Producers and aggregators: Avoid aggressive selling in large cardamom at current depressed levels unless liquidity is critical; staggered marketing into any post-correction recovery may capture better realisations. For small cardamom, maintain quality differentiation, as premiums for top grades are likely to hold.
  • Traders: Expect a more range-bound market in the short term, with relative value opportunities between large and small cardamom, and between domestic and export channels. Monitor arrivals and auction averages closely for the first signs of a floor in large cardamom.

3-Day Directional View (spot & FOB)

  • Indian large cardamom (domestic auctions): Bias slightly stable to firmer as the recent correction appears stretched and selling pressure eases.
  • Indian small/green cardamom (domestic auctions): Bias steady within the current ₹2,600–3,900/kg range, with firm undertone for lower and mid grades.
  • New Delhi FOB whole & powder: Bias slightly firmer after recent incremental increases in both organic and conventional quotations.
