Cumin Market Firms as Indian Jeera Rallies on Tight High-Grade Supply

Cumin market analysis: Indian jeera prices rise on tight export-grade supply, stockist buying and seasonal demand despite weaker export data.

Indian jeera (cumin) prices are moving higher again, led by gains on NCDEX and a firmer Unjha spot market, as limited availability of high-quality stock collides with seasonal demand and renewed stockist buying. The bullish tone persists even though India’s official export statistics still show a double‑digit decline versus last year, underscoring that today’s strength is driven more by near‑term domestic and festival demand than by export pull. Cumin quotations in India and export hubs have edged up over the past three weeks, confirming the tightening picture signaled by NCDEX futures. Spot prices in Unjha – Asia’s key cumin hub – are holding above ₹25,500/q, while futures along the curve remain elevated despite today’s minor correction. For buyers, this means a clearly firmer but still orderly market, with the main risk skewed to further strength if high‑purity export grades do not reappear quickly. Sellers meanwhile regain some pricing power but must watch export demand, which has not yet fully recovered.

Prices

According to the latest Indian market indications, Unjha spot jeera is quoted around ₹25,578 per quintal, close to today’s NCDEX spot reference near ₹25,615/q and the mini‑contract level just above ₹25,700/q.  On the futures side, front NCDEX jeera contracts are trading in the mid‑₹25,000s, with the October and November 2026 positions recently around ₹26,000/q before giving back roughly 1–1.5% in today’s session.

Physical export quotations in EUR corroborate the firmer tone. In Surat, EXW prices for Indian cumin seeds have moved up between 5–7% since late September. For example, EXW Surat "cumin seeds 0.5" 99.5% is now at EUR 3.694 (from 3.331 on 5 October), "Cumin seeds Singapore 99%" at EUR 2.486 (from 2.26), and "cummin (jeera) 98%" at EUR 2.453 (from 2.228) as of 12 October 2026. New Delhi FOB benchmark cumin seeds 99% are quoted around EUR 2.08–2.10, slightly above late‑September values.

Supply & Demand

The current rally is driven primarily by India, the dominant global producer. Market participants report limited availability of ready stock and particularly tight supply of export‑grade, high‑purity seeds. Stockists are actively buying into the uptrend, while seasonal demand linked to the Indian festival calendar adds a second layer of support.

In contrast, India’s official jeera export numbers still show a weaker picture. Cumulative exports from April to July are reported at about 53,462 tonnes, around 27% below the same period last year. More recent customs data indicate that the y/y export drop in July alone was even steeper, above 30%. This suggests the present price strength is not yet underpinned by a broad recovery in overseas demand, but rather by constrained local availability and selective demand for top grades.

Weather & Crop Outlook

Weather conditions in Gujarat, including the Unjha belt, remain hot and seasonally dry. Forecasts for mid‑October (14–17 October 2026) point to maximum daytime temperatures around 37–38°C with clear skies and no significant rainfall.  Such a pattern is broadly neutral to slightly supportive for the standing rabi spice crops: it favors curing and movement of existing stocks but offers little relief where soil moisture is already tight.

For cumin, the more decisive weather window will be the upcoming sowing period. Current dryness is not yet critical but could become a concern if pre‑sowing showers fail to materialize on schedule, potentially constraining the 2026/27 acreage. Markets are already sensitive to this risk, helping explain why futures remain elevated despite today’s modest intraday pullback.

Fundamentals & Market Drivers

  • Limited export-grade stock: The most acute tightness is reported in high-purity export lots, which command a visible premium and are a key driver of the current futures backwardation.
  • Active stockist and festival demand: With the festival season underway, local consumption and pre‑emptive stock building by traders are supporting prices in spot and near‑by futures.
  • Export data still soft: The April–July export decline (around −27%) and a sharp cut in July shipments confirm that the international pipeline is not yet tight in volume terms, which may cap the rally if prices overshoot.
  • Competing spices: Turmeric futures on NCDEX are also firmer, posting daily gains of around 1–3% in some near contracts today,  which tends to support the broader Indian spice complex and investor interest in jeera.

Trading Outlook (Next 1–3 Weeks)

  • For importers and industrial buyers: Consider covering a portion of Q4 requirements at current EUR levels, especially for high‑purity Indian grades, while staggering additional purchases in case export demand remains sluggish and tempers the rally.
  • For exporters and origin sellers: The combination of tighter physical availability and a supportive NCDEX curve offers an opportunity to lock in margins via forward sales, but monitor export inquiries closely; aggressive price targets may face resistance while overseas buyers still see comfortable pipeline stocks.
  • For traders: The near‑term bias remains mildly bullish as long as Unjha spot holds above the ₹25,000/q area and no clear signal emerges of improved high‑grade availability. However, slowing exports and today’s small futures correction argue against overly leveraged long positions.

3‑Day Directional View

  • NCDEX jeera futures: Sideways to slightly firm; consolidation around current mid‑₹25,000s levels with an upward bias if fresh stockist buying appears.
  • Unjha physical market: Stable to firm; spot likely to track NCDEX with narrow day‑to‑day moves as supplies stay measured.
  • Export offers (EUR, India origin): Mild upward tendency or at least no discounting expected, especially for 99–99.5% purity lots, while buyers test resistance to higher offers.
