Indian small cardamom prices firm as festival demand improves and sellers ease discounts. Brief outlook on auctions, FOB quotes and weather for key regions.
Prices
New Delhi FOB quotations for Indian green cardamom have firmed steadily over the past three weeks. For organic whole cardamom (green 6.0–6.5 mm, 99% purity), prices moved from 17.15 EUR/kg on 12 September to 17.85 EUR/kg on 3 October FOB New Delhi. Organic whole green 7.5–8 mm rose from 18.95 EUR/kg to 19.55 EUR/kg over the same period, while organic cardamom powder increased from 24.80 EUR/kg to 25.35 EUR/kg FOB New Delhi.
Conventional whole cardamom grades show a similar, slightly stronger uptrend. FOB New Delhi prices for non-organic green 7–7.2 mm climbed from 24.10 EUR/kg (12 September) to 25.05 EUR/kg (3 October), and green 7.5 mm from 26.00 EUR/kg to 26.95 EUR/kg. The top bold grade, green 8 mm, advanced from 27.90 EUR/kg to 28.85 EUR/kg, while 6.5–6.8 mm lines firmed from 23.00 EUR/kg to 23.95 EUR/kg over the same period. This confirms that the firmer tone described in the physical market is now visible across export-grade quotations.

Supply & Demand
Domestic Indian demand is the primary short-term driver as the festive season boosts purchases from confectioners, sweet manufacturers and retail channels. This seasonal surge is now visible in stronger offtake from consuming centres, where buyers are competing more actively for quality lots. The improved buying interest narrows the room for deep discounts and supports the firm undertone in prices.
On the supply side, cardamom auction arrivals remain significant, but there are signs that sellers are less willing to pressure the market at lower bids. Recent Kerala and Tamil Nadu auctions around 1–3 October show average prices above INR 3,150–3,200/kg even as large quantities continue to be cleared, indicating that demand is absorbing volume at higher levels.
- Average small cardamom auction prices in Kerala/Idukki around 3 October were reported near INR 3,189–3,187/kg, marginally higher than late-September levels.
- Auction arrivals remain robust, but sale ratios are high, with most lots finding buyers at current valuations.
- Exporter participation is present but not yet the dominant driver; the near-term tone is led by domestic festival consumption.

Fundamentals & Weather
Fundamentals currently tilt mildly in favour of sellers: demand is seasonally strong, inventories are being drawn down, and producers are no longer rushing to liquidate at earlier lows. Government and exchange data indicate that weighted average auction prices in previous seasons were significantly lower, underlining how far the market has recovered over the last two years as supply-demand tightened.
Weather in the key Idukki cardamom belt in Kerala for early October looks seasonally wet but without extreme anomalies. Forecasts point to mixed conditions with warm daytime temperatures in the upper 70s to mid-80s °F and regular showers, which should broadly support plantations without major harvest disruption in the immediate term.
Near-Term Outlook & Trading Ideas
Festival demand is expected to keep small cardamom prices supported in the immediate term. Whether the current uptrend can extend beyond the festive period will largely depend on three factors: the pace and quality profile of auction arrivals, the depth of exporter buying, and potential demand normalization in domestic channels once seasonal peaks pass.
- Short-term buyers (food industry, packers): Consider covering a portion of Q4 needs now while the market is firm but not yet spiking, prioritising higher-yield bold grades where replacement risk appears higher.
- Exporters: Stagger purchases across auctions, focusing on fresh, deep-green lots; avoid chasing overly high bids until post-festival demand sustainability becomes clearer.
- Producers/stock holders: The reduced selling pressure is justified; selective selling into current firmness is prudent, but retaining some stock for potential post-festival export-led demand could add value.
3-Day Directional View (Key Hubs)
- Kerala/Tamil Nadu auctions: Mildly upward bias as festival buying continues to absorb arrivals at firm levels.
- New Delhi FOB export market: Steady to slightly firmer across most whole-cardamom grades and powder, with limited downside as long as festival demand persists.
- Domestic wholesale mandis: Stable to firm, with better-quality lots commanding noticeable premiums over mixed or lower-grade stock.
