Concise onion market report: Indian onion powders and flakes nudge higher, Egyptian fresh FOB Cairo firms on strong exports and stable crop, plus 3-day outlook.

Indian onion derivatives and Egyptian fresh onions are moving modestly higher, driven by steady export demand and broadly comfortable crop prospects in India. Powder, flakes and organic qualities out of New Delhi are all posting small week‑on‑week gains, while Egyptian fresh FOB Cairo has firmed in line with strong early‑October vegetable export flows. On the physical side, Indian wholesale onion prices remain moderate as fresh kharif arrivals build and the government continues calibrated buffer stock releases, keeping overall inflation pressures in check.  In Delhi, recent mandi data point to wholesale levels in the mid-₹30/kg range, well below last year’s peaks but high enough to support derivative values.  In Egypt, official export statistics show more than 13,000 tonnes of onions shipped in the first week of October alone, underlining solid international demand that underpins current FOB indications.

Domestic wholesale references in India support these gradual FOB increases: all-India modal mandi prices are around ₹2,377/qtl (≈₹24/kg) as of 17 October, with Delhi slightly above that band.  At Lasalgaon, Asia’s key onion hub, the latest modal price of roughly ₹4,400/qtl confirms a firm but not overheated domestic market, higher than the 30‑day average.

Supply & Demand

In India, the Ministry of Consumer Affairs reports that kharif onion acreage is about 5% higher year on year, with broadly favourable crop conditions and robust arrivals.  Government buffer stock disposal has been expanded to over 120 cities, with onions moved via rail and truck into deficit areas, easing extreme volatility while allowing moderate price strength.  This environment supports processing demand for powders and flakes without the squeeze typically seen in poor harvest years.

Export policy is currently relatively permissive compared with prior crisis episodes: industry trackers indicate that earlier export bans and minimum export price schemes have been rolled back, leaving no blanket ban in place.  That, together with steady overseas interest, particularly from Asia and the Middle East, underpins New Delhi FOB offers. In Egypt, National Food Safety Authority data show onions as the second‑largest vegetable export by volume (around 13,000 tonnes) in the first week of October, with Saudi Arabia, Sudan and Gulf markets acting as key outlets.

Weather & Crop Conditions (EG, IN)

For India, current forecasts for major onion states such as Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh indicate seasonally normal to slightly above‑normal temperatures and only light, scattered post‑monsoon showers over the coming days, conditions generally favourable for kharif harvest and curing operations. No acute weather threat (cyclonic storm or excessive rainfall) is highlighted for the main belts in the next week in the latest regional outlooks.

In Egypt, October weather in key production zones typically shifts toward drier, more stable conditions after the main summer heat, supporting harvest and post‑harvest handling for export onions. Current export performance suggests no significant weather‑related disruption so far this month.  As a result, neither Indian nor Egyptian short‑term weather patterns justify any sharp risk premium in prices at this stage.

Fundamentals & Market Drivers

  • India – comfortable availability: Higher acreage, good crop conditions and ongoing buffer stock operations are collectively keeping physical markets supplied, moderating the upside for both fresh and processed onions.
  • Firm domestic baselines: Delhi wholesale prices in the mid-₹30/kg area, together with Lasalgaon modal near ₹44/kg, provide a solid domestic floor that passes through to FOB levels for powders and flakes.
  • Egypt – strong export channel: Onion export volumes in early October, alongside broad vegetable export growth, point to solid overseas demand and adequate logistics capacity, supporting Cairo FOB fresh prices.

Trading Outlook & 3-Day Price Indication

  • Indian onion powders & flakes (FOB New Delhi): With domestic prices firm but well supplied, expect a mildly upward bias over the next three sessions. Buyers with nearby coverage gaps may consider securing part of Q4 needs now, while waiting for potential dips if arrivals accelerate further.
  • Egyptian fresh onion (FOB Cairo): Robust early‑October exports and supportive demand from Gulf and regional buyers suggest current levels are sustainable in the very short term. Importers could lock in spot and prompt shipments, while remaining cautious on longer tenor in case additional volumes come forward.

3‑day directional view (18‑20 October 2026)

  • FOB New Delhi – onion powder (all qualities) & flakes: Slightly firmer to sideways, tracking steady Indian wholesale prices and export interest.
  • FOB Cairo – fresh onions: Firm bias, supported by active export programs and stable weather, with limited downside expected in the immediate term.
