Large Cardamom Firms on Tight Spot Stocks Despite Good Crop Outlook

Large cardamom prices edge higher as spot stocks stay tight and Nepal arrivals lag, despite good crop prospects in India and Nepal. Concise 2026 market outlook.

Large cardamom prices are stabilising and edging higher as tight spot stocks and slower Nepal arrivals offset expectations of a generally good new crop in India and Nepal. Auction averages and farmgate bids have rebounded from recent lows, and FOB prices in India are ticking up, but abundant forward supply prospects should limit any sharp rally. The market is currently navigating two opposing forces: improving production prospects across key Himalayan origins and immediate supply tightness in physical markets. Recent auction averages around ₹1,200–1,375/kg for large cardamom, with Kainchicut lots recovering towards ₹1,460–1,470/kg, underline a modest but visible price recovery after the latest correction. At the same time, India’s exports in the first two months of FY2026-27 are down year-on-year, reflecting slower Nepal-origin flows and cautious buying. Overall, the near-term tone is mildly supportive, but upside appears capped as harvest progresses and arrivals accelerate.

Prices

Large cardamom prices have recovered modestly after a recent decline, with Kainchicut now reported around ₹1,460–1,470/kg versus lows near ₹1,430–1,440/kg. Latest large cardamom auctions in Singtam, Gangtok and Siliguri on 24 September showed average traded levels mostly between ₹1,200 and ₹1,375/kg, broadly in line with this firmer trend.

In the green cardamom complex, Indian FOB prices in New Delhi have moved slightly higher over September. For organic origins from India, cardamom whole green 6.0–6.5 mm (99% purity) is indicated at EUR 17.7 FOB New Delhi, while cardamom whole green 7.5–8 mm is quoted at EUR 19.4 FOB New Delhi. Cardamom powder (organic, India) stands at EUR 25.2 FOB New Delhi, with conventional whole green 7.5 mm at EUR 26.8 and 8 mm at EUR 28.7 FOB New Delhi.

Supply & Demand

Fundamentally, the large cardamom market is caught between expectations of a good crop in both India and Nepal and the reality of short-term tightness in spot stocks. Nepal-origin supplies into India are currently limited, although arrivals are expected to pick up as harvesting advances through October and November. This seasonality is typical for large cardamom, where main gathering often peaks in this window.

India exported 173 tonnes of large cardamom worth ₹31.18 crore in the first two months of FY2026-27, compared with 215 tonnes worth ₹35.04 crore a year earlier. The year-on-year decline in export volumes underscores reduced inflows from Nepal and some degree of demand rationing at higher price levels. Nevertheless, broader demand from South Asian and Middle Eastern markets remains structurally firm, supported by foodservice and packaged food usage.

Fundamentals & Weather

Recent auction and FOB trends suggest the market is rebalancing after the previous correction, with buyers stepping back in to secure coverage ahead of the main festival and winter demand period. The latest Indian auction data for large cardamom on 24 September point to an active trade with consistent pricing across markets such as Singtam, Gangtok and Siliguri, indicating orderly rather than panic buying.

Weather across the eastern Himalayas has been broadly supportive of crop development so far, with no major disruptions reported that would justify a sustained bull run at this stage. However, localised excess rainfall or disease pressure in high-altitude plantations remains a perennial risk, particularly in Nepal and India’s Sikkim and North Bengal regions. Any weather-related downgrades to yield or quality could quickly tighten the balance sheet given already low pipeline stocks.

Short-Term Outlook & Trading Ideas

The near-term outlook is for a mildly firmer but capped market. Higher new-crop arrivals from India and Nepal over the coming weeks should gradually ease spot tightness and temper further upside. However, low immediate stocks and measured selling interest mean prices are unlikely to revisit recent lows unless arrivals surprise strongly on the upside.

  • Industrial buyers and blenders: Consider covering a portion of Q4 2026 needs on current dips, especially in desired grades, while keeping some flexibility for potential post-harvest softening.
  • Exporters: Focus on nearby shipments, as Indian FOB levels already reflect part of the recovery; aggressive forward offers may face resistance if global buyers anticipate larger arrivals from Nepal.
  • Producers and stockists: Given the combination of tight spot stocks and a good crop outlook, a strategy of staggered selling into strength rather than heavy front-loaded sales appears prudent.

3-Day Market Indication

  • India large cardamom auctions (Singtam/Gangtok/Siliguri): Bias mildly firm, with trade expected near recent averages around ₹1,200–1,375/kg, supported by limited arrivals.
  • FOB New Delhi green cardamom (whole and powder): Tone slightly firm after recent small increases in EUR-denominated offers; further sharp gains are unlikely without fresh supportive news.
  • Nepal-origin large cardamom into India: Physical flows should begin to improve as harvesting progresses, but logistical and quality-related delays may keep the market snug in the very short term.
