Onion prices stay firm in India as Ghazipur mandi tightens on restricted arrivals; export-oriented processed onion quotes remain stable. Near-term outlook: firm.

Onion prices in North India are firm to higher as restricted arrivals support wholesale values in Ghazipur mandi, while export-oriented processed onion prices in New Delhi remain broadly stable but underpinned by tight domestic supplies. The onion complex in India has shifted into a clearly supportive phase. In Ghazipur mandi, wholesale onion has strengthened to around ₹1,475–1,800 per 40 kg amid generally restricted vegetable arrivals, while traders report firm tomato and green chilli prices as well, signalling tight near-term supply across key vegetables. At the same time, export quotations for onion flakes and powders from New Delhi hold steady at elevated levels, reflecting both prior price increases and ongoing caution about new-season crop availability. Market participants should prepare for firm to sideways onion prices into next month, with some relief only once fresh-season arrivals improve.

Prices

Onion prices in Ghazipur mandi have moved up to roughly ₹1,475–1,800 per 40 kg, indicating a firm undertone in the physical spot market as arrivals remain constrained across vegetables. Tomato and green chilli have also risen, confirming that buyers face a tight near-term supply situation, not just a single-commodity move.

In export markets, our latest FOB New Delhi quotations in EUR indicate stable but firm processed onion values: onion powder grade B at 1.22 EUR/kg, white onion powder at 1.60 EUR/kg, organic onion powder at 2.57 EUR/kg, and organic onion flakes at 4.92 EUR/kg, all unchanged in early October compared with late September. Fresh Egyptian origin onion FOB Kairo is indicated at 0.90 EUR/kg, also steady over recent weeks.

Supply & Demand

Vegetable markets are broadly firm because seasonal supplies are limited, with brinjal, spinach, coriander, radish, capsicum, okra, cucumber, cauliflower and bitter gourd all reported tighter. This cross-commodity tightness suggests that logistical and seasonal factors are constraining arrivals, keeping onion demand in Ghazipur focused on limited available lots.

Demand for onions is seasonally solid ahead of India’s festival period and in the context of higher prices in other vegetables, which reduces substitution options for buyers. Export and processing demand for Indian-origin onion powder and flakes remains steady, helped by competitive pricing versus other origins and by limited room for downside as domestic physical prices edge up.

Weather & Crop Outlook

The current firmness is closely linked to restricted near-term availability rather than any immediate crop failure. New-season vegetable arrivals are expected to improve from next month, which should gradually ease pressure on onion and competing vegetables. For now, traders remain cautious about forward sales until clearer visibility on harvest progress and arrivals emerges.

Given the recent erratic monsoon patterns in some producing belts and localized delays in new crop entries reported in other markets, there is a risk that arrivals normalize later than usual. Any further weather disruptions in key onion-growing states could extend the firm price environment into the early part of the new season.

Fundamentals

The combination of tight mandi arrivals, firm cross-vegetable prices and stable but elevated processed onion FOB quotations points to a balanced-to-tight fundamental picture. Processors are unlikely to offer significant discounts while domestic fresh prices in major mandis are moving higher, particularly in hubs such as Ghazipur.

At the same time, the lack of sharp upward moves in export prices suggests that international buyers are resisting higher offers, and that Indian exporters are managing margins carefully. This keeps the market biased upward in the short term but with limited room for aggressive spikes unless arrivals deteriorate further.

Trading Outlook

  • Short-term (next 2–3 weeks): Bias remains firm for Indian fresh onion in Ghazipur and nearby mandis as restricted supplies and strong festival demand support higher bids. Processed onion prices are likely to remain stable to slightly firmer.
  • Medium-term (1–2 months): Once new-season vegetable arrivals improve from next month, some easing of onion prices is expected, especially in physical markets. However, processed products may lag any correction given earlier raw material costs.
  • For buyers: Cover near-term physical needs promptly and stagger medium-term purchases, using any pullbacks after new-crop arrivals to extend coverage in powders and flakes.
  • For sellers: Maintain offered levels on processed onion and consider incremental sales into current strength, while keeping some volume unpriced in case tight arrivals persist longer than expected.

3-day directional view

  • Ghazipur mandi fresh onion: Firm to slightly higher as restricted arrivals persist.
  • FOB New Delhi processed onion (powder, flakes): Stable with mild upside risk on any further tightening in domestic raw onion markets.
  • FOB Kairo fresh onion: Stable, offering a competitive alternative for buyers seeking non-Indian origin in the short term.
