Cardamom prices in India are firming as stockholders restrict selling despite strong arrivals. Latest FOB New Delhi quotes and short‑term trading outlook.

Small cardamom prices in India are firming as stockholders pull back offers, anticipating higher quotations in the coming sessions. Restricted selling has tightened nearby availability even though fresh arrivals continue, supporting a steady upward bias. Cardamom auctions in the Indian growing belt are reporting high clearance rates and slightly higher average prices week-on-week, pointing to resilient domestic and export demand. At the same time, New Delhi FOB quotations for key whole green grades and organic lines have moved modestly higher over the past two weeks, in line with stronger auction realizations. Heavy to very heavy rains forecast for Kerala and Tamil Nadu could briefly disrupt harvest and logistics, reinforcing the current firmer tone if quality remains acceptable.

Prices

Selected small cardamom grades in Indian producing markets have reportedly increased by around US$0.53 per kg, driven primarily by reduced selling interest from stockholders and expectations of higher levels ahead. This tightening on the offer side has occurred despite continued fresh arrivals into the physical market.

FOB New Delhi prices in EUR mirror this strengthening trend. Between 17 October and 24 October 2026, indicative quotations rose across key whole green grades: 6.5–6.8 mm from 24.1 EUR/kg to 24.6 EUR/kg FOB, 7.0–7.2 mm from 25.25 EUR/kg to 25.75 EUR/kg FOB, and 8 mm from 28.95 EUR/kg to 29.45 EUR/kg FOB. Organic whole green 6.0–6.5 mm moved from 18.1 EUR/kg to 18.6 EUR/kg FOB over the same period, while organic cardamom powder advanced from 25.5 EUR/kg to 25.9 EUR/kg FOB.

Supply & Demand

According to local reports, fresh arrivals of small cardamom continue in Indian producing regions, but marketed volumes are being curtailed by stockholders deliberately restricting selling. This behavior suggests growers and dealers are not under immediate liquidity pressure and are positioning for further price gains.

Recent auction data show strong clearance rates and firm average prices. Weekly Spices Board e-auctions between 19 and 25 October saw about 430 tonnes of small cardamom arrive, with roughly 98% sold and an average price around INR 3,111 per kg, slightly higher than the previous week, while top lots exceeded INR 4,300 per kg. This reflects active domestic and export demand absorbing near-peak harvest flows.

Fundamentals & Weather

The current firmness is fundamentally driven by a combination of controlled selling and solid demand during the main October–November marketing window, when South Indian cardamom typically sees its seasonal peak in arrivals. Auction statistics point to balanced-to-tight spot availability despite sizeable inflows, consistent with the observed rise in selected grade prices.

Weather risk is re-emerging as a short-term supportive factor. India Meteorological Department updates and national media highlight forecasts of heavy to very heavy rainfall over Tamil Nadu and Kerala around 24–27 October, linked to cyclonic activity over South Peninsular India. While short-lived, such events can slow harvesting, drying and transport, temporarily tightening high-quality offerings if field access and post-harvest handling are disrupted.

Outlook & Trading Recommendations

In the near term, the combination of restricted selling, firm auction realizations and weather-related operational risks points to a mildly bullish bias for small cardamom. Traders will closely track upcoming auctions for any change in availability, grade mix and bidding interest to judge whether the latest upward move can extend.

  • Importers / industrial buyers: Consider covering a portion of Q4 needs at current FOB levels, prioritizing key 7–8 mm grades where price increases have been moderate so far. Stagger purchases across the next auctions to manage upside risk if stockholder withholding intensifies.
  • Exporters / stockholders: The market presently rewards quality; holding well-graded lots may remain attractive while monitoring rains and any shift in auction buying. However, avoid excessive long exposure ahead of any demand lull after the seasonal festival period.
  • End users / blenders: Review formulations to optimize between whole and powder, as organic powder and larger whole grades have also appreciated, but still show only incremental gains week-on-week.

3‑Day Directional View (India)

  • Indian small cardamom auctions: Bias slightly firmer over the next 2–3 sessions, with high-quality small cardamom likely to attract continued premiums if rains briefly constrain field operations.
  • FOB New Delhi (whole green & organic): Tone steady to firm; limited downside expected in the very short term unless stockholders resume heavier selling into auctions.
