The black pepper market in India is facing a challenging time due to low buying activity and the slow arrival of the new crop. Even though the latest harvest has begun, the major shops, including Kochi in Kerala, have reported much less black pepper. This has led to weak buying.

Farmers need help

Even though the monsoon season has been favorable for pepper cultivation, farmers need help to sell their produce as buyers procure directly from them. This has caused a market slowdown as even central distributing states like Karnataka and Kerala experienced tight supply. There is talk that this year’s production of black pepper may decline by 20%, contributing to the bleak outlook.

Imports of black pepper from Vietnam have caused a slight stir in the domestic markets despite the government’s crackdown on imported pepper earlier.

Challenging times

The problem also arises from direct deals between buyers and farmers, frequently occurring in various commodities, including pepper. This has led to a slowdown of work activities in multiple shops across Kerala. The wholesale price of black pepper has improved despite minimal sales and arrivals. With poor prospects for pepper reform in the near future, it seems the black pepper market in India will continue to face a challenging time.

The Pepper black 550 g/l prices were Recorded at $6,42 per kg FOB.
