Kochi and other areas in the south of India are waiting for the monsoon to be active.

There has been a weak off-take for black pepper, resulting in a slump of $0,13 – $0,19 per kg in Kochi. In the coming days, black pepper in the spot market is not likely to move up.

Current Scenario

It was believed pre-monsoon would increase the activity in the market. But no such trend was observed. On the other hand, the new crop in Makara in Karnataka is expected to be relatively weak. In Kerala, the arrival of the new crop of black pepper in the spot markets is negligible.

Due to negligible selling, the sentiments of the markets are being affected. It can be felt in the business activities in Kerala and Karnataka. However, the wholesale trade of the commodity is on.

The new crop of black pepper has been coming in the rural areas for the last several months, but it is not coming to the big markets of the state like Kochi.

The main reason is that the buyers are directly purchasing the commodity from the farmers.

Over the past few years, direct deals in various significant commodities, including black pepper, have increased in Kerala. This is the reason why the operational activities across multiple spot markets of the state remain sluggish.

Future

This time the production of black pepper in Kerala is expected to fall. It is because farmers have shifted to planting other crops. After all, they have not received reasonable prices for the commodity for the last few years.

The Black Pepper 500 GL prices were Recorded at $7,45 per kg FOB
