China Adzuki Beans: Slow Farm Selling Keeps Market Firm Despite Low Stocks

Chinese adzuki bean farmers sell slowly amid smaller acreage and low factory stocks. Read how this is supporting prices and what to expect short term.

Farmers’ strong reluctance to sell new-crop red adzuki beans in Northeast China is keeping spot supply tight, even as processors and traders run deliberately low inventories. With reduced planted area and lower yields, plus farmers focused on corn harvesting, near‑term upward pressure on adzuki prices is likely, especially for high‑quality lots. China’s main adzuki-producing regions report only modest farmer selling so far this season, leaving processors to operate largely hand‑to‑mouth. Inventory levels at both traders and processors are uneven but generally low, limiting downside risk on prices. At the same time, FOB indications for Chinese beans in Beijing and Brazilian/UK origins show mostly steady to slightly firmer levels in recent weeks, underscoring a broadly supported global beans complex. Short‑term, the key watchpoints are the pace of post‑harvest farmer sales and any weather‑related storage or logistics disruptions in Heilongjiang and Jilin.

Prices

Domestic red adzuki beans in Northeast China are underpinned by tight farmer selling and structurally smaller output. While detailed RMB spot quotes vary by region and quality, the market tone is firm, with buyers reporting limited ability to pressure prices lower given constrained arrivals.

On the export side, Chinese beans FOB Beijing show a mixed but overall supported picture. Recent quotations include Adzuki beans, red, 5.0 mm up at EUR 1.42/kg FOB Beijing (conventional) and EUR 1.49/kg FOB Beijing (organic), Mung beans 3.8 mm up at EUR 1.59/kg and organic mung beans at EUR 1.64/kg, as well as kidney beans (large white) at EUR 1.88/kg and dark red kidney beans at EUR 1.45/kg FOB Beijing. In Brazil, dark red kidney beans stand at EUR 1.18/kg FOB Brasília, while UK FOB London prices for white kidney beans hover around EUR 1.20/kg.

Supply & Demand

Market participants report that, by this week, farmers in China’s main producing regions have sold only around 13% of their 2026 red adzuki bean crop. In Heilongjiang, average farm sales are just 10–15%, with Harbin around 15%. Jilin is somewhat faster at roughly 20%, while Jiangsu and Anhui are only seeing scattered volumes arriving.

Traders in the Northeast hold highly variable stocks, in some cases only about 100–200 tons per operator, and both high and low inventory situations coexist. Processing plants largely buy and sell on a just‑in‑time basis and keep inventories at low levels. With reduced adzuki planting area and lower yields, plus farmers currently focused on harvesting corn and other major crops, the selling pace for red adzuki remains slow and spot availability thin.

Fundamentals & Weather

The fundamental backdrop is clearly tighter than in previous seasons: smaller adzuki acreage, yield losses, and modest carry‑in stocks are combining with slow farmer marketing to compress supply available to the trade. Processors and traders consciously pursue low‑stock strategies, which magnify price sensitivity to any demand uptick or logistical delay.

Weather risks in the short term look moderate but relevant. Forecasts for November indicate below‑normal temperatures over parts of Heilongjiang and eastern Jilin, while much of the rest of China remains relatively warm, with above‑average precipitation concentrated in central and southern regions. Provincial outlooks suggest mid‑ to late‑November cold waves and light snow in Northeast China, with generally slightly below‑normal precipitation. These conditions mainly pose risks to on‑farm storage and rural logistics rather than to already harvested adzuki yields.

Short-Term Outlook & Trading Ideas

  • Price trend (China adzuki): Bias is sideways to firm for the next 1–3 weeks, as farmer reluctance to sell and low commercial stocks offset seasonally quiet demand.
  • Processors: Maintain minimum working stocks but avoid aggressive destocking; consider forward‑covering a share of Q1 needs while farmer selling is still slow.
  • Traders/exporters: Favor back‑to‑back business and quality‑focused procurement; premiums for larger size, well‑cleaned adzuki are likely to persist under current tight fundamentals.
  • Importers/buyers: For Chinese origin red adzuki and mung beans, consider staggering purchases rather than waiting for sizeable harvest‑pressure discounts, which may remain limited this season.
