China sunflower market: Gansu harvest accelerates, listings increase, but buyers remain cautious and prices stay under pressure. Short-term outlook and trading tips.

Entering August, China’s sunflower market is shifting into active harvest mode in Gansu while prices remain slightly soft and trading is subdued. Supply is building faster than demand as major off-takers are still on the sidelines, keeping a lid on near-term price upside despite improving product availability. The main production areas in Gansu have moved into a concentrated listing phase, with more varieties and volumes appearing as farmers accelerate sales. However, external bulk buyers have not yet entered the market in force, and activity is dominated by scattered small-lot deals. Buyers are focused on strict quality selection and testing the market, while sellers also probe price levels. Most participants expect meaningful trading interest only once volumes peak later in the month, leaving short-term prices vulnerable to further adjustment depending on quality and early demand signals.

Prices

FOB Beijing indications on 7 August show sunflower seeds (black with stripe, 98% purity, CN origin) at about EUR 1.33/t, slightly down from EUR 1.35/t a week earlier. Hulled sunflower kernels for bakery use are quoted around EUR 1.20/t (down from EUR 1.22/t), while confection kernels are at roughly EUR 1.13–1.14/t, with organic product also edging EUR 0.02/t lower compared with late July.

This mild downward drift aligns with the current pattern of accelerating supply from Gansu while terminal demand remains hesitant. Internationally, Ukrainian and Bulgarian seed and kernel offers are significantly cheaper in EUR terms, highlighting external price pressure on Chinese exporters, especially for bulk and lower-spec segments.

Supply & Demand

Market feedback from Gansu indicates that overall listing of sunflower seeds has “fully opened up” in early August, pushing the production region into a concentrated new-crop phase. Variety and grade availability are improving, and the expectation is that by the end of the month volumes will “completely release,” substantially increasing spot supply.

In contrast, end-user and large out-of-province buyers have not yet started systematic procurement. Current trade is limited to sporadic small orders, with a generally weak purchasing atmosphere. Buyers are taking a cautious approach, prioritizing better lots and enforcing strict quality controls, which increases pressure on mid- and low-grade material while top-quality product may retain some premium.

Fundamentals & Weather

The market is in a classic price-discovery stage, with both sides probing offers and bids and very few bulk deals concluded so far. The industry consensus is that real demand activation will only come once end-August volumes confirm both overall supply size and quality profile. Until then, sentiment remains neutral to slightly bearish.

Weather in Gansu over the next three days is forecast to be hot with mostly sunny to partly cloudy conditions and localised thunderstorms, with daytime highs around 36–38°C. These conditions are generally supportive for ongoing harvest and post-harvest drying, reducing immediate weather-related yield risks but also facilitating a continued rapid flow of new-crop product into the market.

Short-Term Outlook & Trading Ideas

  • Producers/first handlers: With supply building and demand still inactive, consider staggered sales rather than aggressive front-loaded selling. Protect premiums for high-quality, well-cleaned lots where buyers’ strict quality selection offers some resistance against price erosion.
  • Domestic processors: The current quiet market and slight price softening favour gradual coverage for near-term needs, but avoid over-stocking before the end-month volume peak clarifies overall supply and quality.
  • Exporters/importers: International competition from lower-priced Black Sea origins argues for tight cost control. Use current CN price softness to test competitiveness in niche segments (high purity, organic, snack-grade kernels) rather than volume business.

3-Day Price Indication (Direction, EUR)

  • FOB Beijing sunflower seeds, black with stripe: around EUR 1.30–1.33/t, bias slightly lower as listings increase.
  • FOB Beijing bakery sunflower kernels: around EUR 1.18–1.20/t, stable to slightly softer amid limited demand.
  • FOB Beijing confection kernels (incl. organic): around EUR 1.13–1.15/t, largely range-bound with quality-dependent premiums.
