Chinese Beans Edge Higher as Middle East Demand and Ramadan Cycle Re‑Align

Chinese beans prices are firming on concentrated demand from the Middle East and Southeast Asia and a tighter Chinese supply base. Read the latest concise outlook.

Chinese beans are trading with a mild upward bias, supported by concentrated export demand from the Middle East and Southeast Asia and a structurally tighter supply base in China. Price gains are moderate but visible across key lines, with white kidney, dark red kidney, mung and adzuki beans all edging higher FOB China. The market remains heavily export-driven. While Chinese sunflower kernels dominate shipments to more than 100 destinations, beans follow a similar pattern of concentration: a few regional clusters absorb most volumes, and logistics and currency risk in core Islamic markets increasingly shape demand. With Ramadan 2027 (expected around 8 February–9 March) approaching, Middle Eastern buyers are starting to rebuild positions earlier, while Southeast Asian snack and halal segments keep baseline demand solid.

Outside China, Brazilian kidney and UK broad/fava beans are mostly flat to slightly softer in EUR terms, underscoring that the current firmness is concentrated in Chinese-origin pulses rather than a synchronized global rally.

Export Demand Structure

Chinese exports of value-added seeds and pulses are highly concentrated in a "tri‑polar" geography. More than 60% of exports gravitate toward the Middle East and Southeast Asia, with Europe providing a smaller but higher-margin outlet.

  • Middle East (30–35% share): The largest single market cluster. Purchases are strongly driven by stocking ahead of Ramadan and Eid al‑Fitr. Iraq consistently ranks as the most reliable growth market, while Turkey, Pakistan and Egypt are emerging as new demand poles as Iran’s buying has been constrained by FX and payment issues.
  • Southeast Asia (20–25% share): Demand is more evenly spread through the year, focused on flavored snacks, instant foods and halal-certified products. For beans, this translates into steady orders for mung and adzuki beans used in desserts, pastes and sprouts.
  • Europe (around 10–12% share): Volumes are smaller but realizations higher, centered on baking, organic and energy-bar applications. European buyers are quality- and certification-sensitive, particularly for organic kidney and mung beans.

Inner Mongolia remains the core producing and export-processing hub, accounting for roughly 80% of China’s kernel exports and serving as a critical logistics and pricing reference for pulses as well.

Fundamentals & Seasonality

China’s beans sector is structurally tighter than a decade ago, following reductions in planted area and competition from oilseeds and higher-value crops. This has capped exportable surpluses and increased price sensitivity to shifts in external demand.

For the coming season, demand seasonality is again anchored around the Islamic calendar. Ramadan 2027 is expected to run roughly from 8 February to 9 March, bringing forward Middle Eastern and part of Southeast Asian stocking into late Q4 2026 and January 2027. Buyers in Iraq, Pakistan and the Gulf typically secure sunflower kernels and pulses together, reinforcing combined demand for Chinese origins.

Weather and Production Outlook (China)

Recent agro-meteorological briefings for northern China indicate typical late-autumn cooling, with occasional weak rain or snow events in Inner Mongolia and surrounding provinces over the coming week. Daytime highs in key inner-Mongolian logistics centers now range roughly from low single digits to mid-teens Celsius, with overnight frosts increasingly common.

These conditions are broadly seasonal and mainly affect the pace rather than the outcome of late harvesting and drying. Short-lived rain or light snow may temporarily slow fieldwork and rural logistics but is not expected to materially damage yields at this stage of the season.

Trading Outlook

  • Chinese exporters: Use the current firm but still orderly market to secure forward sales into the Middle East and Southeast Asia for Q1 2027 arrival. Prioritize Iraq, Turkey, Pakistan and Egypt where demand momentum is strongest, while closely evaluating counterparty and payment risk in Iran.
  • Importers in the Middle East: Consider scaling in purchases of Chinese mung, adzuki and kidney beans before the main Ramadan rally in Q1. The recent step‑up in FOB Beijing prices suggests further upside is possible if demand accelerates.
  • European buyers: For high-spec white and organic kidney beans, early coverage is advisable. The combination of constrained Chinese supply and competing demand from emerging markets limits the likelihood of meaningful price dips in the near term.

3‑Day Directional View (CN‑Origin FOB)

  • Mung beans (FOB Beijing): Bias slightly upward as exporters test higher offers on the back of stronger October levels and forward demand from Asia.
  • Kidney beans (FOB Beijing): Expected to remain firm, with large white and dark red types holding recent gains amid active inquiry from Middle East and South Asian buyers.
  • Adzuki beans (FOB Beijing): Tone steady to firm; thin spot liquidity and steady snack/confectionery demand support current price ideas.
