Chinese beans exports see strong growth to Middle East, South Asia and EU organic segment, supporting firm prices despite mixed trends across varieties.
Prices
FOB Beijing prices in mid-July show a generally firm undertone for Chinese beans. Organic mung beans are quoted around EUR 1.53/kg and conventional mung beans at about EUR 1.44/kg, both slightly above early-July levels in EUR terms. Dark red kidney beans have been broadly stable at roughly EUR 1.35/kg, while black kidney beans are near EUR 1.08/kg.
In contrast, large white kidney beans from China have eased from roughly EUR 1.90–2.02/kg in late June to about EUR 1.80–1.90/kg, reflecting some buyer resistance at earlier highs and increased competition from other origins. Brazilian dark red and brown-eye kidney beans are stable near EUR 1.23–1.28/kg FOB, while UK-origin broad and dried beans have seen minor downward adjustments but remain close to EUR 1.10–1.42/kg.
Supply & Demand
Exporters highlight that demand growth is now led by emerging markets in the Middle East, South Asia and Southeast Asia. Saudi Arabia stands out as a core Middle Eastern market, where imports of Chinese beans (including large white beans) in 2025 rose about 24% year on year and are expected to maintain high double-digit growth in 2026. This reflects a young population, rising plant-based food consumption and a strong traditional base for pulses.
India has rapidly become one of the main short-term demand engines. Chinese bean exports to India jumped from about 338 tonnes in January 2026 to nearly 1,418 tonnes in February 2026, driven by restocking and robust food processing demand in South Asia. At the same time, European buyers in France, Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium and Spain are sharply increasing orders for organic and high-grade small grains from Shanxi Tianzhen, including premium large white beans used in health-food and plant-based applications.
Fundamentals & Segment Dynamics
The combination of fast-growing emerging-market demand and premium EU requirements is reshaping China’s beans export structure. Volume growth is strongest in cost-sensitive markets such as Saudi Arabia and India, where Chinese product competes on price and reliability. Meanwhile, Europe is providing margin support via high-grade, organic and functional white beans that command a clear premium in health-oriented and plant-based product lines.
This two-tier demand profile is encouraging Chinese exporters to differentiate between bulk-standard and certified organic or specialty beans. While some varieties like large white kidney beans have recently seen price corrections, the underlying pull from EU organic channels and Middle Eastern/South Asian food manufacturers suggests that supply will remain tightly balanced for top-spec material, particularly ahead of seasonal buying campaigns.
Short-Term Outlook & Trading Strategy
Given the strong structural demand signals from Saudi Arabia, India and selected EU markets, Chinese bean prices are expected to stay broadly supported in the near term, with only limited downside for mainstream varieties and continued upside risk for organic and large white beans once current corrections run their course. Market participants should assume that restocking in South Asia and Middle Eastern demand for Ramadan and other festivals will continue to underpin export flows into early Q4.
- Exporters in China: Prioritise contracts with Saudi Arabia, India and EU buyers for organic and large white beans; secure logistics early and consider staggered pricing to capture potential Q4 firming.
- Importers in Middle East & South Asia: Use current stability in Brazilian and Chinese kidney beans to lock in core volumes; avoid over-reliance on single origins in case of weather or logistics disruptions.
- EU buyers in organic/premium segment: Advance purchase programmes for high-grade and organic large white beans to mitigate potential supply tightness and price volatility later in the season.
3-Day Regional Price Indication (EUR, directional)
- China FOB Beijing (kidney, mung, adzuki): Mostly steady in EUR terms over the next three days; organic and premium grades biased slightly firmer on export demand.
- Brazil FOB Brasília (kidney, alubia): Stable around recent levels, with little indication of immediate upward pressure in the short three-day window.
- UK FOB London (broad, fava, dried beans): Prices expected to remain flat to marginally softer, tracking ample local and imported supply.
