Corn Market Holds Support as EU Maize Tightens and Black Sea Risks Persist

Concise corn market update: Euronext maize stays firm, CBoT softens on US harvest, while EU tightness and Black Sea disruptions support prices.

Corn futures are drifting slightly softer on CBoT while Euronext maize holds firm, underpinned by tight EU balance sheets and ongoing Black Sea disruptions. Physical prices for feed corn in Ukraine have eased at the FCA/FOB level but remain supported versus earlier in the month, as logistics constraints and strong EU feed demand offset harvest pressure from the Northern Hemisphere. Across regions, market attention is split between a lagging but accelerating US harvest, mixed EU yield outcomes, and weather‑driven uncertainty for the upcoming South American cycle. Early Brazilian soybean planting is progressing within or ahead of normal windows, preserving the potential for timely 2026/27 safrinha corn, while El Niño‑related dryness in parts of central Brazil remains a key risk. At the same time, Ukraine is pushing more grain via Danube and overland routes, but infrastructure attacks and capacity limits continue to cap export flows, keeping a risk premium in Black Sea‑linked corn values.

Prices

Euronext maize futures are broadly stable with a firm old‑crop structure: Nov 2026 at EUR 285.00/t, Mar 2027 at EUR 265.25/t and Jun 2027 at EUR 262.75/t, before easing to EUR 226.25/t for Nov 2027, signalling an ample forward supply outlook in the outer campaigns.

On CBoT, front‑month Dec 2026 corn trades at 459.75 US‑cents/bu (‑0.16% day‑on‑day), with a mild upward curve towards Mar 2027 at 473.75 US‑cents/bu and Dec 2027 at 498.00 US‑cents/bu, reflecting modest carry and comfortable US balance sheet expectations.

Chinese DCE corn futures moved higher on 22 October, with the actively traded Jan 2027 contract closing at 2,203.00 CNY/t (+0.59%), indicating firm domestic demand and limited near‑term supply slack in China.

In the physical market, recent offers show Ukrainian yellow feed corn 14.5% max moisture at Odesa FCA at EUR 0.16/kg on 22 October (down from EUR 0.17/kg), while Ukrainian feed corn 14% max CPT Odesa stands at EUR 0.144/kg on 21 October (up from EUR 0.141/kg on 20 October), illustrating short‑term volatility but a broadly sideways trend this week. German feed corn EXW Drentwede is quoted at EUR 0.28/kg on 21 October, slightly below earlier October levels, while French yellow corn FOB Paris is indicated at EUR 0.28/kg as of 16 October, reflecting firm EU coastal values.

Supply & Demand

The latest EU balance sheet update confirms a structurally tighter maize situation into 2026/27, with lower planted area and only a partial yield recovery from prior drought years, keeping import demand elevated and supporting Euronext prices.

In Ukraine, Black Sea port disruptions and attacks on Odesa area infrastructure are forcing a shift of old‑crop corn exports to Danube and overland routes, where capacity constraints and higher freight costs limit volumes despite strong price competitiveness.

US corn harvest is accelerating under a drier Midwest forecast, pointing to abundant near‑term supplies, but recent export sales to China and firm domestic feed use expectations are preventing a deeper price break.

South America is entering a weather‑sensitive window: early Brazilian soybean planting is broadly on schedule, preserving the potential for a large 2026/27 safrinha corn crop, while El Niño raises the risk of dryness in parts of central Brazil even as Argentina and southern Brazil trend wetter, supporting their corn potential.

Fundamentals & Weather

Fundamentally, the forward Euronext maize curve shows a premium in nearby contracts over 2027 maturities, consistent with constrained short‑term EU supply and reliance on imports, particularly from Ukraine and South America.

Physical price patterns mirror this: Ukrainian FOB and FCA values at Odesa remain discounted to EU domestic levels, but logistical bottlenecks and security risks at Black Sea ports maintain a basis that compensates exporters for higher risk, while overland “Solidarity Lanes” via the EU are running near capacity.

Weather‑wise, short‑term forecasts indicate mostly favorable harvest conditions in the US Midwest, while South American outlooks highlight a north–south split: drier tendencies in central Brazil, where much of the future safrinha corn will be grown, versus wetter conditions in southern Brazil and Argentina that are positive for their early corn stands.

Trading Outlook (Next 1–2 Weeks)

  • End‑users in the EU: Consider scaling into nearby coverage on price dips in Euronext and Ukrainian CPT/FCA offers, as structural tightness and Black Sea risk limit downside despite US harvest pressure.
  • Producers in Ukraine and EU: Basis remains your key lever; maintain flexibility between local sales and export channels, prioritising Danube and overland routes where margins justify added logistics costs.
  • Speculative traders: The flat but supported structure suggests range‑bound trade; strategies that monetise volatility around key weather headlines in Brazil and export news from the Black Sea may be preferable to outright directional bets.

3‑Day Directional Outlook

  • Euronext maize: Mildly firm to sideways, with support from tight EU balances and Black Sea risks offsetting external harvest pressure.
  • CBoT corn: Slight downside bias as US harvest advances, tempered by recent export demand and South American weather uncertainty.
  • Black Sea physical corn (Ukraine): Sideways to slightly softer nominal values, but with a persistently elevated risk premium embedded in logistics‑adjusted prices.
