Corn markets ease from recent highs: sharp Euronext correction, softer CBOT on better Midwest weather, strong but lower YoY US export sales and lighter fund length.
Prices
On Euronext, corn retreated on Friday more sharply than on the CBOT. The front November 2026 contract fell by 9,25 EUR to 292,00 EUR/t, while March 2027 lost 4,75 EUR to 271,00 EUR/t but still closed the week roughly 2,3% higher after setting fresh contract highs on Wednesday. Back months through August 2027 eased by around 4 EUR/t, signalling a broad but orderly correction after the recent rally.
In the German cash market, South Oldenburg wholesale corn slipped 3 EUR to 289 EUR/t on Friday, yet prices remain at their highest levels since early 2023, highlighting persistent tightness in local supply-demand. Current export- and domestic indications also show this firmness: FOB Paris yellow corn from France is quoted around 0,28 EUR/kg, while German feed corn EXW Drentwede trades near 0,29 EUR/kg. Ukrainian origins show more pressure, with FOB Odesa offers near 0,139–0,149 EUR/kg and CPT into export channels around 0,151–0,162 EUR/kg in recent days.
Supply & Demand
CBOT corn futures posted a fourth consecutive daily decline, with December 2026 slipping to about 472,75 US‑cents/bu, marking the lowest close since 13 August. The main driver is a more favourable weather outlook for the US Midwest, which should accelerate harvest this week and ease immediate supply concerns. Faster fieldwork typically boosts near‑term physical availability and can briefly weigh on nearby futures.
US export demand remains solid, even if year‑on‑year comparisons are softer. Weekly export sales for the week to 8 October reached 1,122 million tonnes for the 2026/27 season, 46% above the previous week and the highest weekly tally of the current campaign, but still 15% below the same week last year. Mexico led purchases with about 544.500 tonnes, followed by Japan with 220.100 tonnes and South Korea with 199.900 tonnes. In addition, the USDA confirmed a separate sale of 127.000 tonnes of corn to Japan, and a South Korean buyer booked around 134.000 tonnes with optional origin, underscoring broad Asian interest.

Fundamentals & Positioning
The latest CFTC Commitments of Traders data show a notable reduction in speculative length. In the week to 13 October, managed money funds cut their net long position in corn by roughly 83.000 contracts to about 246.000 contracts, still elevated in a multi‑year context but clearly off recent peaks. This profit‑taking aligns with the price correction seen on Euronext and CBOT after several sessions of strong gains and fresh contract highs in Paris.
Overall, fundamentals remain balanced to mildly supportive. High European cash values and still‑robust export interest point to firm underlying demand, while the improved US weather outlook and advancing harvest cap the upside in the short term. Ukrainian offers trading at a discount to EU origins continue to anchor Black Sea competition, but logistical and geopolitical risks keep a risk premium embedded in European prices.
Weather & Harvest Outlook
Forecasts for the US Corn Belt over the next few days indicate generally drier and seasonally mild conditions, favouring an acceleration of harvest which had been intermittently slowed by earlier showers. This should help move more new‑crop supplies into the pipeline, easing nearby basis levels and reinforcing the recent softness in Chicago futures.
In Western and Central Europe, weather is less critical at this late stage of the season, with much of the crop already harvested or close to completion. Short‑term precipitation patterns are therefore of limited immediate price relevance, with logistics, demand and external competition playing a greater role for European quotations.
Trading Outlook (Next 1–3 Weeks)
- Producers (EU): Use the recent pullback to review sales, but avoid aggressive forward selling while prices remain near early‑2023 highs. Layer sales on strength towards recent Euronext highs above 300 EUR/t for Nov 2026.
- Consumers/Feed buyers (EU): Consider locking in portions of Q4 2026–Q1 2027 needs on current dips, especially where local cash values track Euronext March near 270 EUR/t. Maintain some flexibility in case US harvest pressure leads to further downside.
- Traders/Funds: After the sharp reduction in managed‑money length, further downside may become more fundamentals‑driven. Short‑term tactics could focus on range‑trading, selling rallies towards recent highs and covering near recent lows, while closely watching US export pace and Black Sea offers.
