Flaxseed Flat but Diverging: Canada, India and Kazakhstan Hold Narrow Range
Concise flaxseed price report: Canada and Kazakhstan stable, India easing from highs. Includes weather, supply-demand drivers and 3-day price outlook.
Prices
All prices converted to EUR using approximate FX on 13 September 2026 (1 CAD ≈ 0.67 EUR, 1 USD ≈ 0.92 EUR, 1 INR ≈ 0.011 EUR). Values are indicative for export-grade bulk, not retail.
Indian mandi data from Agmarknet-based trackers show national average linseed at about ₹9,000–9,300 per quintal on 10–11 September, down roughly 13% from a week earlier but still near record monthly averages for August 2026. Canadian No.1 flax farm prices for the 2025/26 crop are projected around CAD 625/t in-store Saskatchewan, below the five-year average but consistent with current flat cash values.
Supply & Demand
Canada enters 2025/26 with the highest flax supply in five years: Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada estimates total supply near 599 Kt (+39% y/y), with exports up about 23% and carry-out stocks projected to rebuild to roughly 230 Kt. This comfortable balance sheet keeps Canadian export offers competitive despite temporary harvest delays.
In India, linseed arrivals across major mandis remain moderate but prices have softened slightly as monsoon-related logistical bottlenecks ease and speculative buying cools after August’s record monthly average (~₹9,425/qtl). Domestic crush and feed demand stay firm, yet at current levels India is more oriented to satisfying domestic users than pushing aggressive export volumes.
Kazakhstan continues to act as a premium supplier of high-quality, often organic flaxseed into Europe and Asia. No major news on crop loss, export restrictions or rail disruptions has emerged in the last few days, suggesting normal execution of 2026/27 export programs. Recent climate and seasonal outlooks point to typical continental conditions rather than acute stress.
Weather Snapshot (CA, IN, KZ)
Canada (CA): Western Canada’s Prairies recently saw heavy rains and severe weather that temporarily halted harvest in parts of Saskatchewan and Manitoba, but the latest outlooks turn cooler and more stable into mid-September as fall-like air moves in. This may slow drying but is not yet causing broad yield concerns for flaxseed, which benefited from earlier moisture.
India (IN): Monsoon conditions are shifting towards a late-season withdrawal pattern; mandi reports focus on price normalization rather than crop damage for linseed, and there are no fresh large-scale weather alarms specific to flaxseed areas in the last three days.
Kazakhstan (KZ): National hydrometeorological outlooks for September show near-normal temperatures and precipitation across key grain belts, with no indication of extreme events threatening standing flax or late-season fieldwork. Weather therefore remains a background, not a lead, price driver for KZ-origin flax in the very short term.
Fundamentals & Flows
- Canada: Rebuilt stocks and record 2025/26 yields leave exporters with ample coverage; AAFC’s projected average price of about CAD 625/t (≈ 420 EUR/t ex-farm, implying ≈ 900–1,000 EUR/t FOB depending on basis) frames the current flat FOB Ottawa offers as fairly valued.
- India: National wholesale linseed prices eased ~13% w/w by 11 September but remain historically high, suggesting some room for further mean reversion if arrivals improve; INR softness partly offsets this in export parity.
- Kazakhstan: With limited fresh news and no visible policy shifts, KZ flax continues to price at a structural premium to Canadian and Indian origins, reflecting organic status and logistics into EU crushers.
3-Day Trading Outlook & Price Direction
- Canada (CA, FOB Ottawa): Stable to slightly firm. Weather-related harvest delays are largely priced in; we expect a sideways range around 950–990 EUR/t for organic brown flax over the next three trading days, with buyers patient and sellers reluctant to discount.
- Kazakhstan (KZ, FOB Astana): Stable. With no new supply shocks, KZ-origin organic flax is likely to hold near 1,650–1,700 EUR/t, maintaining a firm premium but with limited liquidity in the spot window.
- India (IN, FOB New Delhi): Mild downward bias. Recent mandi data point to easing prices; we see INR-based values drifting lower, translating to roughly 870–900 EUR/t FOB if rupee and freight stay near current levels.
Trading Notes
- Importers into EU/MENA: Consider layering small nearby coverage from Canada while basis is capped by comfortable stocks; use KZ-origin mainly for premium organic or specific quality niches.
- Indian buyers: Avoid chasing short-term rallies; mandi indicators suggest better buying opportunities if arrivals improve into late September.
- Producers (CA, KZ): With no strong bullish catalysts, scale-up sales on modest rallies rather than holding out for a sharp autumn price spike.
