German Corn Prices Hold Firm as Black Sea Risks Flare Up Again

German feed corn prices hover near EUR 253/t as Black Sea grain tensions rise but local weather and EU supplies keep markets broadly balanced.

German feed corn prices are holding broadly steady around recent highs, with export-linked volatility in the Black Sea adding a mild risk premium rather than triggering a sharp rally so far. In northern Germany, physical feed corn ex farm remains close to EUR 0.25/kg, consolidating gains made since late June and tracking a stable to slightly firmer tone on Euronext corn futures. At the same time, renewed attacks on grain vessels and port infrastructure around Odesa and the wider Black Sea, as well as shipping restrictions for Russian exports, are tightening risk perception on forward supply but have so far translated more clearly into wheat than corn price spikes. Near-term weather in Lower Saxony is seasonally mild with intermittent rain, supporting crop conditions and limiting local weather-driven upside.

Prices

German feed corn (EXW Drentwede, 14% moisture) is indicated around EUR 0.253/kg, flat versus yesterday and roughly 3–4% above late June levels based on recent trades.

Euronext corn futures in Paris are trading near EUR 235–245/t for forward positions, reflecting a slightly firmer tone over the last sessions as Black Sea risk is repriced into the curve.

Supply & Demand

Locally, German and wider EU corn balance sheets remain comfortable, with the European Commission still projecting robust coarse grain availability for 2026 despite geopolitical and weather risks.

Globally, however, Black Sea logistics are again under pressure. Russian strikes recently hit a foreign vessel loaded with corn near Odesa and destroyed another cargo ship, while Ukraine’s export capacity from Odesa-region ports has reportedly dropped to around two-thirds of prior levels.

At the same time, Russian grain exports face their own constraints as shipping from shallow Black Sea ports is restricted for safety reasons, curbing flows and lifting regional grain prices.

Fundamentals & Weather

The EU short-term agricultural outlook underscores that coarse grain markets enter 2026 with adequate stocks but heightened uncertainty from energy prices, trade tensions and conflict-related disruptions.

For Lower Saxony and the Drentwede area, the 3‑day outlook calls for mixed clouds, showers and moderate temperatures around 20–24°C, with night lows near 10–12°C.

Such conditions are broadly beneficial for corn, helping maintain soil moisture without adding heat stress. This supports expectations for a decent domestic crop and tempers any weather-driven urgency on nearby physical prices in Germany.

Short-Term Outlook & Trading Ideas

  • Price direction (Germany): With local fundamentals steady and supportive weather, spot EXW values around EUR 250–255/t are likely to hold, with only limited upside unless Black Sea disruptions worsen sharply.
  • Risk premium from Black Sea: Ongoing attacks on Ukrainian ports and vessels, plus constraints on Russian shipments, argue for maintaining modest coverage of Q4–Q1 needs via Euronext or physical contracts rather than relying on spot later.
  • For buyers: Consider layering in incremental purchases on minor dips towards EUR 0.245/kg EXW, while avoiding heavy chasing higher unless futures break convincingly above current ranges.
  • For sellers: Producers with good crop prospects may scale up hedges or forward sales into any further futures strength triggered by Black Sea or Middle East shipping headlines.

3‑Day Regional Price Indication (Germany)

  • Spot feed corn EXW (Lower Saxony): Expected to trade in a narrow band around EUR 250–255/t over the next three days, with a slight upward bias if additional Black Sea incidents or stronger Euronext closes emerge.
  • Basis vs. Euronext: German physical basis likely remains broadly stable, with any futures-led rally only partially passed through to farm-gate prices in the very short term.
