Guar Seed Softens on Demand Dip, but Low Acreage Limits Downside

Guar seed and gum prices eased on weaker industrial and export demand, but reduced acreage and steady export interest limit downside and support a mildly bullish outlook.

Guar seed and guar gum markets have corrected on softer industrial and export demand, but structurally tight acreage suggests only limited downside from current levels. Futures have cooled as speculative interest faded, yet any revival in export or oil-sector offtake could quickly tighten the balance again. After a firm run earlier this season, physical guar seed and gum prices in Jodhpur and on NCDEX slipped as buyers stepped back and futures corrected. Near-term sentiment is cautious, with weaker industrial and export demand weighing on spot and September contracts. However, the planted area is lower this season, so supply is likely to remain structurally tighter than average. Against this backdrop, modest downside from current levels appears likely, while renewed export or oilfield demand would quickly turn the tone supportive again.

Prices

In the Jodhpur market, guar seed has eased to around USD 70.38–70.91 per quintal, while guar gum has slipped to roughly USD 134.93–135.99. Guar churi is quoted near USD 36.51–38.10 per quintal, highlighting a broad softening across the guar complex as near-term demand falters.

Recent mandi data for Rajasthan confirm a pullback, with Jodhpur guar seed modal prices sliding from earlier peaks in early September, in line with the reported correction in the futures market.

Export offers for organic guar gum powder from India and Vietnam are currently indicated around EUR 4.00–4.05/kg FOB, broadly steady over the last two weeks, suggesting that while domestic prices corrected, international quoted values are holding a relatively stable range.

Supply & Demand

The key supportive factor is a reduced planted area this season, which constrains potential output and should limit deep price declines even if demand remains sluggish in the short term. Lower acreage will magnify the price impact of any positive demand surprise later in the season.

On the demand side, industrial and export offtake have slowed, weighing on both guar seed and guar gum. The oil and gas sector, a critical consumer of guar derivatives, has been less aggressive in recent tenders, which, combined with weaker speculative participation, explains the current softness in physical and futures markets.

Nonetheless, international mandi and APMC data point to still relatively firm prices across Rajasthan markets compared with earlier in the year, indicating that structural demand remains intact and that the current dip is more a correction from elevated levels than the start of a prolonged downtrend.

Fundamentals & Weather

NCDEX guar gum September futures have declined in recent sessions, reflecting weaker speculative interest and profit-taking after prior gains. This futures correction has transmitted to spot markets, encouraging sellers to accept slightly lower bids to move existing stocks.

In Rajasthan, recent weather has been generally favourable for standing guar crops, with no major widespread stress events reported over the past week. Localised showers have supported yield prospects, though overall production potential is capped by the smaller planted area.

Given this combination—adequate in-season weather but lower acreage—the market is poised such that any pick-up in export enquiries or oilfield demand could rapidly translate into tighter availability and firmer prices, especially for higher-quality seed and gum.

4–6 Week Market & Trading Outlook

The near-term outlook is for a sideways to mildly firmer market once the current demand lull stabilises. With acreage lower and international offers steady, there appears limited room for a deep decline from present levels unless demand weakens further or macro signals turn sharply risk-off.

  • Producers: Avoid aggressive selling at current discounted levels; consider staggered sales, retaining a portion of stocks for a potential Q4 recovery if export or oil-sector demand revives.
  • Exporters/industrial users: Use the current dip to secure forward coverage in guar gum and seed, especially for high-quality grades, while basis levels remain relatively attractive.
  • Traders/speculators: Short positions should be managed cautiously; with low acreage, risk-reward now favours gradually shifting to buy-on-dips strategies rather than chasing further downside.

3-Day Directional View (EUR-based)

  • Jodhpur guar seed (spot, EUR-equivalent): Mostly steady, with a slight upward bias if local demand improves toward the weekend.
  • Guar gum FOB India (around 4.05 EUR/kg): Expected to remain in a tight range, with minor firming possible on any fresh export enquiries.
  • Guar complex overall: Short-term consolidation likely, but downside from here appears limited given the constrained acreage backdrop.
